On Thursday evening, Roy Yamaguchi kicked off the 30th birthday of his eponymous restaurant at the place where it all began, Roy’s in Hawai‘i Kai. Here’s a look at how the father of Hawaiian-fusion cuisine celebrated his milestone.


1. Sold-Out Celebration

The sold-out event took place at Roy's in Hawai‘i Kai.


On Thursday, Roy’s Hawai‘i Kai was filled from ground to ceiling with chefs, friends and fans of the iconic restaurant. Tickets to the event were sold out just days after sales started.


2. A Toast to 30

You know you’ve made it when you have your own brand of bubbly. Roy kicked off his kick-off with cocktails, wine and bottles of the restaurant’s own prosecco.


3. Bites by Hawai‘i’s Best Chefs

Guests enjoyed dishes expertly prepared by 10 of the state’s best chefs, from Ed Kenney to Lee Anne Wong to Michelle Karr-Ueoka.


4. Three’s Company

Featured chefs of the night included the only three James Beard-awarded chefs in Hawai‘i: Alan Wong, George Mavrothalassitis and, of course, Roy Yamaguchi himself.
