5 Christmas Treats Your Pets Will Love

Treat your pet to these locally made Christmas gifts.
My dogs—from left, opae, indy and sunny—hiking one of their favorite trails at Hanauma Bay. After a hike this like, they’ll need a bath. I splurge on locally made shampoos and hair conditioners for them.

The holidays are just another excuse for animal lovers—like me!—to spoil our pets. Here are some of my favorite stocking stuffers for my pooches, which, incidentally, make great gifts for anyone on my Christmas list who adore their pets, too.

Holiday biscuits

Hawai‘i Doggie Bakery is a charming shop and bakery in Mānoa with a ton of great gifts for dogs—and their owners. The holiday biscuit pack ($14) is filled with Oh, Sweetheart Tree Fish-n-Poi Pup Treats, “Gingerbread” Man Chicken & Poi Munchies and Sweet Potato Snowflake Biscuits. The bakery never uses butter, sugar or preservatives.

The Poi Dog Island Mango dog shampoo ($10.50) from Lanikai Bath and Body is all natural, lightly scented and gentle on your pooch. The coconut and kukui-nut oils heal hot spots and help to promote a healthy coat. And the shea butter and aloe vera help to relieve dry, itchy skin—a benefit if you, like me, take your dogs to the beach a lot.

Whenever I’m on Maui, I make a point to visit the Ali‘i Kula Lavender Farm and stock up on this pet hair conditioner ($12) for either cats and dogs, made from the lavender grown there. Not only does it smell good, it’s gentle and doesn’t irritate my dogs’ skin.

Try the Pack Leader Hawaiian Wild Venison Blend ($49.99 for a 15-pound bag), made with 100-percent-local venison meat sourced from Moloka‘i and Maui. It’s packed with protein and low in fat, making it a healthy choice for your dogs.
