4 We Tried: We Search for the Best Local Granola on O‘ahu

From La Tour’s all-natural mix to Anahola’s range of flavors, we raided O‘ahu shelves, farmers markets and bulk bins for the best local granola.

Every year we seek out the best food, shopping, services and more for our Best of Honolulu feature. Here are some of the top contenders for Best Local Granola—both packaged and in market bulk bins. Find out who won here! Available on newsstands in July, or purchase the issue at shop.honolulumagazine.com. Subscribe to the print and digital editions now.

Even though there’s no sugar or honey added, this granola still gains a bit of sweetness from apple juice and dried cranberries, as well as the unexpected addition of dates and prunes. The all-natural granola—oats, seeds (sesame, pumpkin and sunflower), almonds, pecans and coconut—is a hefty breakfast with yogurt. We found 8-ounce packages at the KCC Farmers Market for $4 each (two for $7.50, three for $11).

Anahola Granola

Anahola

Anahola’s four flavors—original, tropical (macadamia nuts, pineapple, papaya), mango ginger and trail mix (pumpkin seeds, raisins, almonds, banana chips, dried fruit)—are available at hotels, restaurants and grocery stores statewide. The original, our favorite, is a flavor-packed combination of whole-grain rolled oats and local honey, sunflower seeds, walnuts, sesame seeds, coconut and vanilla. A 12-ounce bag costs $7.99 at Whole Foods.

Aloha Granola

Aloha

The Nutty Honey flavor from Aloha Granola tastes best as a snack straight from the bag, with sweet clusters and whole almonds, sunflower seeds and walnuts. There’s also original and tropical, with papaya, pineapple, mango and coconut. We bought it at Safeway: $4.99 for an 8-ounce bag.

Kōkua Market

Kokua

Many of the bulk bins at Kōkua Market are dedicated to locally made, organic Kōkua Bakery granola, from sugar-free to maple pecan to very berry to walnut raisin. Our favorite has cacao nibs, maple syrup, vanilla extract, flax, chia, coconut flakes and almonds, plus pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds. Use the granola, nice and crunchy, as a topper for fruit crumbles. Bring your own container and weigh it at the counter first; $6.99 per pound.
