Christopher Kim, an eighth grader at Maui Waena Intermediate School, became the 2011 aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee Champion after correctly spelling the word “obfuscatory” in Round 43. (The definition of obfuscatory is “tending to make difficult of comprehension or interpretation.”)
The competition was held on Saturday, March 19 at PBS Hawaii studio, starting with 14 finalists who represented Hawaii’s seven districts: Honolulu, Central Oahu, Leeward Oahu, Windward Oahu, Maui, Big Island and Kauai. The ages of the finalists ranged from 10 to 14 years old. The live broadcast was aired by PBS Hawaii, with a radio simulcast on ESPN 1500 AM.
Seventh grader Esther Kim, 13, of Hilo Intermediate School, is our state’s first runner-up. Ironically, Christopher’s mom shares the same name as her: Esther Kim.
Starting in Round 10, Christopher and Esther were the only two remaining finalists competing for the championship title.
“Christopher and Esther are both amazing spellers who competed head to head in 23 rounds together,” says 2011 aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee coordinator Sherie Char. “We also had 11 championship one-word rounds where the speller was given an opportunity to spell the next word on the list known as the anticipated championship word. It was the Bee that almost never ended!”
Christopher, 13, is a returnee to the Hawaii State Spelling Bee, having placed third in 2010. When he’s not studying for the Bee, he enjoys reading and playing instruments. Christopher was also part of PBS Hawaii’s first season of Hiki Nō, the nation’s first statewide student news network. His dream job is to become a lawyer, pastor or the UN Secretary-General.
“We’re happy to have Christopher represent our state in the Scripps National Spelling Bee,” says aio founder and CEO Duane Kurisu. “We wish him the best of luck and look forward to cheering him on in June!”
The 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held on June 1 and 2 in Washington, D.C. It will be televised on ESPN.
PBS Hawaii will show a rebroadcast of the 2011 aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
