1st annual "Mangoes at the Moana"
Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa will launch its 1st annual “Mangoes at the Moana” event on Saturday, July 11. Locals and visitors are invited to join in on the free festivities from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Chef de Cuisine Rodney Uyehara from the Beachhouse at the Moana will share one of his own secret mango recipes as he prepares a pancetta-wrapped onaga dish with a mango beurre blanc sauce, topped with mango relish. Complimentary samples will be served after the demonstrations. The culinary demonstrations with mangoes starts at 11 a.m. through 1 p.m. at Beachhouse at the Moana.

Moana Mango Recipe Contest, 9 – 11 a.m., Banyan Courtyard
Chefs and chef hopefuls are invited to submit their best recipes online for pre-judging and finalists will be invited to put these recipes to the test in front of a panel of celebrity judges including Chef Chai Chaowasaree of Chai’s Island Bistro and 2008 Miss Hawaii Nicole Fox. Prizes include a two-night stay in an ocean front room at the Moana Surfrider, dinner for two ($150 value) at Beachhouse at the Moana, and a luxurious spa treatment ($150 value) at the Moana Lani Spa, A Heavenly Spa by Westin.
Mango Farmers Demo and Tastings, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Banyan Courtyard
Hawaii’s mango farmers will provide free samples of the different varieties of mangoes that are grown on their farms. Guests will have a chance to “talk story” with the farmers to get an in-depth view of how they raise their trees to produce a world-class product.

Mango Seminar by Mark Suiso and Heidi Bornhorst, 11 a.m. – 12 noon, Lanikai Room
Join local farmer Mark Suiso of Makaha Mangoes and garden columnist Heidi Bornhorst in a “Know your Mango” seminar that will cover how to cultivate and grow a mango tree, the history of the mango, and varieties of mangoes in Hawaii. Other prominent local mango farmers will also be on hand to share their tips and first-hand knowledge of caring for mango trees.
Lunch and afternoon tea, 12 – 3 p.m., The Veranda
Afternoon Tea at The Veranda is a local tradition with a selection of fine teas, delicious finger sandwiches, salads, scones and delicate pastries, and relaxing views of Waikiki Beach. Throughout July, Mango lovers will also delight in the mango filled menu of mango tea, mango scones, curd and cakes.
Throughout the “Mangoes at the Moana” kickoff event on July 11, there will be free entertainment at the Banyan Courtyard from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
“Mangoes at the Moana” will also feature a Mango Sunset cocktail in celebration of Moana’s month-long mango festivities. This wonderfully refreshing elixir will be available from July 11 – 31 at Moana Surfrider’s Beach Bar and Beachhouse at the Moana and is made with Barcardi Grand Melon, Barcardi O, mango puree, and a splash of cranberry.

In addition, from July 11 – 31, Chef Uyehara will offer a variety of mango-inspired mango dinners at Beachhouse at the Moana. These limited-time-only dinner specials will include dishes such as fresh local catch-of-the-day with mango relish, asparagus with mango hollandaise sauce, a sweet and savory cheese platter served with mango preserves, and desserts such as mango crème brulee and mango gelato!
