10 Cool Things from Ikea’s 2018 Catalogue That Actually Ship Direct to Honolulu
You can now have some of that minimalist Swedish furniture delivered straight to your Honolulu zip code.
Ahh, the new Ikea catalogue. All that minimalist Swedish goodness. All those hip, hygge vignettes. It’s affordable-home-décor porn at its finest.
Of course, for Islanders, Ikea has always been a bit of a tease, since the retailer had long refused to ship even the tiniest HACKAS drawer handle our way. What the FRAKTA bag, right?
Until recently, that is. A few years back I started to notice that select items were actually kicking out shipping quotes for my Honolulu zip code. I gave it a whirl and ordered a coffee table which successfully shipped directly to my home.
And each year since, more and more items have become eligible. Large pieces are usually out—anything weighing more than 70 pounds, says the site. But select chairs, rugs, side tables and coffee tables make the cut, along with a fair amount of accessories.
Scroll down for a roundup of chic direct-to-island pieces from the newly dropped 2018 collection, shipping costs included. Plus, my handy tips for getting the most Ikea bang for your buck.

It turns out that the Hawai‘i shipping costs are pretty damn steep. They’re determined by weight, size and the distance the package needs to travel. There is no reference scale on the site though, so the only real way to calculate it is to add items to your cart and see what pops up.
At $60, the fee for my table came out to more than the table itself, a cool $40. But still, at $100 total, a bargain. So, look for lower-priced pieces to even out the load.

Accessory shipping costs average around $40 per individual piece. Major gulp. But they seem to go down if you order more than one item. I was quoted a flat $40 for all four of the below pieces when bundled in one order. So, buy your small items all at once or get some friends to jump in on the same order.

Depending on size and weight, Hawai‘i orders usually ship by air via FedEx or UPS. Or, at least this is what I was told by customer service—I couldn’t find any Hawai‘i specific shipping info on the site. But you can get a preliminary shipping date by starting the checkout process and inputting your delivery address. For the above four accessories I was quoted just shy of three weeks.
Finally, returns. According to customer service, if an item is damaged, Ikea will send you a return label and have a mail service pick the item up for free. However, if you’ve simply just changed your mind, you’ll be sent the same return label but charged a pick-up fee similar to the initial delivery amount. So, be ready to keep whatever arrives or throw it in the gift pile for the holidays.
