Remodeled condo in the heart of Waikiki

When I talked with realtor Carol Taylor of Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties about this one-bedroom condo in the heart of Waikiki, she pointed out one of its notable qualities: Instead of glass windows, it has remote-controlled hurricane shutters.

Though Honolulu doesn’t often come under serious threat of hurricanes, it is comforting to know that you’d be prepared.

“I’ve never seen a unit with 100 percent hurricane shutters,” says Taylor. They were installed when the owners completely remodeled the unit last year. Totaling more than $60,000, the renovations also include high-end appliances, deep granite counters in the kitchen and enclosing the lanai to bump up the space to 815 square feet. They even moved the walls to accommodate a full-size tub in the bathroom.

Located in the Kailani building on Lewers Street, Taylor says the location is perfect if you work (and want to live) in Waikiki. You’re in walking distance to loads of restaurants and shopping. The address scores an 86 out of 100 on Walkscore.com, rating it “very walkable.”

Trade winds keep the 12th floor unit cool, but if we get another vog spell like this month’s unbearable sweat fest, you can switch on a portable A/C unit.

The maintenance fee, which includes cable TV, hot water and sewer, is remarkably low at $377 a month.

Fuzz factor: Pets are allowed, but need to be reasonable in number and size. So if you have 11 Great Danes, this might not be the best fit.

One covered and secure parking stall is included in the price.

You can see the condo for yourself this Sunday at an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Click here for details.

One last thing, if you fancy the furnishings, they’re up for grabs, too (price negotiable).

Money talk: $383,000 fee simple
