Two of our favorite local designers Matt Bruening and Rumi Murakami teamed up for Paper Plane, a joint runway show on Friday, Nov. 2, at Hawai‘i State Art Museum.
Half the show featured Paper, Murakami’s sharply tailored Fall/Winter 2018 womenswear collection, replete with structured silhouettes, design elements that folded, wrapped and draped, and a simple color palette of blue, black, white and red. The other half was dedicated to Anywhere But Here, Bruening’s escapist-inspired Resort 2019 collection, a mix of vacation-ready womenswear and menswear pieces that played with sheer fabrics and retro-minded prints.
Within their collections, both designers created a single look inspired by a piece of artwork on display at Hawai‘i State Art Museum. Taking cues from Satoru Abe’s “80 Men” metal-and-wood sculpture, Murakami dreamt up a white asymmetrical top with a handkerchief hem and matching skirt, both made from crisp Japanese shirting cotton. She adorned the look with folded pieces of French cotton grosgrain ribbon that cascaded over one shoulder, wrapped around the opposite hip and trickled down to the skirt hem.

For Bruening, Rieko Mochinaga Brandon’s shibori fiber piece, titled “Woman”, translated into a dreamy wrap jacket and pant set crafted from floaty layered organza. Using Japanese thread, Bruening embroidered faces on the back of the jacket and front of the pant, and eyes on the sleeve hems and back of the pant, to evoke Mochinaga Brandon’s striking facial composite.
Select pieces from both collections are available for purchase at HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x Mori by Art + Flea through November, Hawai‘i State Art Museum, No. 1 Capitol District Building, 250 S. Hotel St., 566-6615. To custom order pieces, visit mattbruening.com and rumimurakami.com.
