Enlist in Boot Camp
We checked out two outdoor fitness boot camps that promised to whip us back into shape. Here's how they stacked up:

| Women who need a kick-start—or a kick somewhere else—to get into shape. | WHO GOES | A good mix of men and women of all ages and fitness levels, from at-home moms to fighter pilots. | ||||
| Monday through Friday, 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. (yes, in the morning), Kapiolani Park and Kailua Beach Park. | WHEN | Tuesdays and Thursdays, around 5 p.m., Kaneohe Marine Corps Base and Kailua Beach. | ||||
| The sun’s not up yet, and you’re wondering why you are. But you realize it’s better to work out now, before you have time to come up with an excuse. | ATMOSPHERE | Everyone knows each other. They meet for dinners and weekend workouts. And they’re happy to invite barely-in-shape writers along, too. | ||||
| After the 5 a.m. alarm, you still have to get through the one-hour class, which includes everything from squats to yoga to kickboxing. | DIFFICULTY | Depends on how difficult you want it to be. The group does two-mile swims, runs for miles on beaches and works on running techniques. | ||||
| Dressed in fatigues, personal trainer Kalani Ng looks intimidating, but the former Army medic is more supportive than you’d expect. “This program builds confidence, too,” he says. | THE INSTRUCTOR | Triathlete Amy Bennett is the most cheerful former Marine drill sergeant you’ll ever meet. Her one flaw? Forgetting to watch the time while the group is suffering in plank position. | ||||
| $299 for five days a week ($199 for three) over | THE COST | $170 for twice-weekly sessions over eight weeks. | ||||
| Surprisingly refreshed and very eager to sit in a comfortable chair for the rest of the day. | HOW I FELT AFTER | Let's put it this way, I was still hurting a week later. | ||||
