Celebrate RumDependence Day at Mahina & Sun’s

Try the agricole rum of Kō Hana and talk story with brand manager and master bartender Kyle Reutner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on July 4 in the Tasting Room at chef Ed Kenney’s Mahina & Sun’s at the Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club. The room is located in the hotel’s cabana area. Reutner will be pouring complimentary samples of the various types of Kunia-made rum, as well as other local bitters and spirits. (Kenney and Reutner have both won Hale ‘Aina Awards for their other ventures.)

To celebrate the Fourth of July, the restaurant is also featuring a special barbecue lunch menu served poolside, with ribs, brisket, cornbread, coleslaw and collard greens.

 

The Tasting Room hosts complimentary events like this every Tuesday, where guests can sample craft beers, wines or spirits curated by bar lead Robert Bidigare.

 

(And, if you’re not doing anything tonight—June 30—the Surfjack is hosting a talk-story session with noted surfing filmmaker Taylor Steele at 6 p.m. His film, Proximity, will premiere on July 1 at the Honolulu Surf Film Festival at the Doris Duke Theatre.)

Bread & Butter Hosting a Beer Pairing Dinner

Five courses, five beers. That’s the menu for Bread & Butter’s beer pairing dinner on Thursday, July 6.

 

The menu, which was created by chef Jared Astrinos with pairings by Southern Wine & Spirits cicerone Bill Carl, will feature beet terrine, Tabasco-smoked charred Spanish octopus, fresh sous vide halibut and pan-seared duck breast, all paired with craft beers of all varieties. There’s even a dessert pairing: house-made pistachio-and-lemon ice cream with Midnight Sun Arctic Rhino coffee porter. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and costs $65 per person.

Taste the Flavors of Peru at a Special Dinner at Hōkū’s

Novo-Andean dishes by chef Dustin Koerner of Portland’s celebrated Andina Restaurant will be on the menu in various forms from July 14 to 31 at the The Kāhala Hotel & Resort.

 

Koerner will host a private five-course dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 14, with special wine pairings by the hotel’s master sommelier-in-residence Roberto Viernes, and South American cocktails crafted by beverage artist Julie Reiner. The menu includes ceviche de mango verde, trio de causa (Peruvian layered potato dish) and lomo saltado (Peruvian stir fry). Cost is $135 per person.

 

The Maile Room will host a ceviche and poke challenge between Koerner and Hōkū’s executive chef Wayne Hirabayashi, with paired cocktails, on Saturday, July 15. The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and includes an educational seminar, food tasting and cocktails. Cost is $50.

 

From July 15 to 31, Hōkū’s will offer a special four-course menu by Koerner, with his take on Peruvian culinary traditions. Cost is $75.

Roy’s Hawai‘i Kai Offers Sunset Menu

Take advantage of the longer days this summer at Roy’s Hawai‘i Kai, which is now offering a three-course prix fixe sunset pau hana menu.

 

Offered from 5 to 7 p.m., the menu features furikake-crusted big-eye ‘ahi tataki on Waimānalo greens, flame-grilled petite filet mignon and garlic shrimp Kaua‘i prawns, and the restaurant’s signature pineapple upside-down cake with vanilla ice cream. Cost is $45. Add $12.50 for a glass of Roy’s cabernet sauvignon or chardonnay.

Brew’d Serving Brunch at Night

Who says brunch has to be during the day?

 

Not the folks at Brew’d. The gastropub in Kaimukī is serving brunch from 5 to 11 p.m. on Tuesdays. The menu features house-made doughnuts with a craft-beer glaze ($8), biscuits with local pork sausage gravy ($10), a local pork sausage waffle sandwich ($12), and breakfast poutine with sausage, cheddar cheese, lamb gravy, bacon, eggs and tater tots ($12). There are also special brunchy cocktails, including Grapefruit Wheaties (grapefruit juice, Waikīkī Brewing Co. Hana Hou Hefe) and StrawBEERy Mosa (German Berliner Weisse, orange juice, strawberry syrup).

Two New Dinner Dishes at M.A.C. 24/7

The 24-hour Waikīkī eatery has recently unveiled two new dishes for dinner: a pan-seared boneless pork chop with mushroom and onion gravy and garlic mashed potatoes ($19) and a giant tempura fish sandwich with Sriracha tartar sauce and sidewinder fries ($18).

TS Restaurants Turns 40

The Maui-based restaurant chain with 13 eateries in Hawai‘i and California celebrates 40 years.

 

TS Restaurants has grown from its first location—Kimo’s in Lahaina in 1977—to restaurants spanning the state and California, most notably Duke’s Waikīkī and Hula Grill Waikīkī. Kimo’s is still open, too, and has become a landmark on Front Street with its harbor views, fresh fish and the chain’s famous Hula Pie.
