Best reason for a North Shore day trip? A bevy of E.K. Fernandez rides, live entertainment, games galore and lots of oh-so-‘ono local food. The Waialua Carnival is coming to the country, with all proceeds benefitting Waialua High and Intermediate School, so every time you spend some dough on a trip through the Magic Maze or spin in Area 51 (not for the faint of heart), you’ll know you’re supporting education. Same goes for every time you munch on some tasty funnel cakes or caramel apples. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it—for the kids.

Always dreamed of taking to the skies? Now’s your chance! Well, kind of. The very cool Open Cockpit Day at the Pacific Aviation Museum is as close most of us will get, with a chance to suit up and climb into the cockpits of some of the facility’s totally legit, high-performance aircrafts. Flight suits, helmets and real-life aviators will be on site to assist and chat about what it’s like to basically be the coolest humans around. Sure, it’s a big kid event, but parents (or just people) with a love for aviation (um, all of us?) will have a blast as well. Tip: Bring your cameras.

Saturday, March 5
Put down the Justin Bieber for one night and settle into exotic sounds from visiting Asian musicians. The trio on stage at Orvis Auditorium this weekend comes from Pro Musica Nipponia, an award-winning, Tokyo-based ensemble that performs traditional and contemporary Japanese instrumental music. You’ll see (and hear) these experts making sweet music with the shamisen (a type of lute), shakuhachi (a bamboo flute) and koto (a very cool stringed piece). They’ll even be playing some new works by UH composers! Sorry, Biebs. You can’t beat that.

The Upcycle of Life

You are already totally onboard the upcycle trend train, thanks to Pinterest and crafting. But, what happens when some expert makers/artists take upcycling to the next level, coincidentally during the Fourth Annual Hawai‘i Sustainability in Higher Education Summit? Check out the artwork, made from foraged detritus, at the Commons Gallery this weekend. Pieces on view include Bernice Akamine’s telephone wire-roadkill-flotsam creation, Mary Babcock’s fishnets-and-lines concoction, Eli Baxter’s twist on bicycle tires, Aaron Padilla’s construction waste project and more.

We don’t know about you, but we always feel a little bit better just stepping into the gorgeous Modern hotel. Throwing in a lineup of wellness activities certainly helps, too. This weekend’s The Modern Detox event will have just that: Think yoga by Lululemon, a meditation session with Sarah Daigle, juice, music and exercise, from morning to sunset. There will be a fresh, healthy food menu available throughout the day, and even a chance to get in some retail therapy at vendor S.tory Standards.
