Hey there, globetrotter. This weekend, we’re whisking you away to new tastes and new adventures. Depart on an around-the-world culinary trip and dine on dishes crafted by 14 restaurants, each repping its own cuisine, this Sunday at HONOLULU Magazine’s Hale ‘Aina Awards. On Saturday, head to Kaka‘ako for a stein-clinking, bratwurst-devouring German celebration. Plus, get out of your comfort zone at a blush-inducing, skin-showing burlesque festival, or learn a new skill (and meditation technique) at a macramé workshop at The Surfjack.

2018 Hale ‘Aina Awards

Around the world in 80 days? Most of us don’t have the luxury of quitting our day jobs to see the world with Jackie Chan. But HONOLULU Magazine’s Hale ‘Aina Awards, this Sunday at The Royal Hawaiian, only needs one evening to take you on an international culinary adventure. The theme this year, Destination Delicious, draws inspiration from all the international cuisines that can be enjoyed right here in the Islands, represented by 14 award-winning restaurants, including Arancino at the Kāhala, The Pig & The Lady, Agu Ramen Bistro and Grondin. While we can’t give you Jackie Chan’s kung fu skills or impeccable comedic timing, we can offer you an evening of worldly bites, signature cocktails and live entertainment under the Hawaiian night sky.

Hawai‘i Macramé Workshop
Saturday, Sept. 16, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
How many times have you looked at a friend’s macramé wall art and thought, “Couldn’t I just make that?” Macramé, the art of knotting rope or string to create patterns, has become the en vogue home accent. And while you could spend the next 24 hours wading through Pinterest D.I.Y. projects and YouTube tutorials, why not spend two hours poolside instead, learning under the guidance of a macramé pro? This Saturday, The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club hosts Portland-based fiber artist Kaysie Condron for a special workshop that will leave you with your very own piece of beautiful wall art. Condron, who owns the online shop Little Feral, is a self-taught fiber artist who believes that having a creative outlet is essential to emotional well-being. Her workshop will show you the basics of macramé, as well as show you how creating art can be a great way to unwind, meditate and leave you feeling refreshed and totally relaxed. Coupled with The Surfjack’s ultra-relaxing ambience, this class will leave you with more satisfaction and self-accomplishment than any Pinterest tutorial could offer.

Sixth Annual Hawai‘i Burlesque Festival & Revue
Friday, Sept. 15 and Saturday, Sept. 16
The annual Hawai‘i Burlesque Festival & Revue is all about crazy, sexy, body-positive fun! Watch some of the best in the biz strut it up at two shows, which includes, in addition to featured performer RedBone (voted No. 19 of 21st-Century Burlesque Magazine’s Top 50 of 2016), a star-studded cast of local, national and international performers, many with equally entertaining stage names: The Cherry Blossom Cabaret, Bunnicula Blanc, Foxy Knox, So Cray Cray Ray, Boob Radley and many more. Friday’s Overboard: A Naughty Nautical Adventure Across the Pacific! is a full-steam-ahead performance of underwater ballets and stripteases, while Saturday’s Chinatown Oh Chinatown: A Madcap Burlesque Romp Around Honolulu’s Iconic Chinatown takes the audience on an adventure as performers search to find the mythical “Heart of Chinatown.” RedBone will also lead two dance workshops. With a little practice and a lot of confidence, it could be you on that stage next year.

Salt Bar Crawl: Oktoberfest
Saturday, Sept. 16, 5 to 10 p.m.
You don’t have to be German to enjoy beer and bratwurst. And you don’t have to be in Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest. At Salt Bar Crawl: Oktoberfest, dozens of German-style beers from all over the world will be available for your enjoyment at Moku Kitchen, Village Bottle Shop & Tasting Room and Bevy. Though this celebration spans just one evening (compared to Munich’s, which runs 16 to 18 days), Salt is pulling out all the stops—multiple beer gardens, live bands (with some German music sprinkled into the mix), Bavarian-style bratwursts from Hank’s Haute Dogs—in what promises to be the event’s biggest bar crawl yet.
