April Fools’ Day: You either love it, hate it or love it too much. For you pranksters who may take the holiday a little too far, this weekend promises karmic redemption with a fundraising event for Hawai‘i’s hungry. You’ll also have an opportunity to shop for apology gifts at a market featuring more than 50 local vendors—or, if you’re sorry-not-sorry, revel in your fiendish ways and enjoy 2001’s cult hit (starring Jake Gyllenhaal and a demonic bunny), remastered in 4K on the big screen.
A grassroots effort started by the fine clay throwers of Hawai‘i Potters Guild, Empty Bowl Hawai‘i is a biennial event to raise funds and awareness for Hawai‘i’s hungry. For the cost of one ticket, guests may sift through thousands of bowls to hand-pick their very own one-of-a-kind keepsake, plus enjoy one bowl of soup donated and side of bread donated by local restaurants. We suggest heading to the event as soon as it starts—if you’re lucky enough, you may just snag a bowl crafted by one of Hawai‘i Potters Guild’s professional potters! (If not, though, with the guild’s goal of having 3,000 bowls for the event, you’re bound to find one you’ll love.) Those who want a little more than soup might opt for one of the two higher-tier ticket choices, each of which comes with a premade bento and beverage ticket good for beer, wine or a soft drink. Proceeds go to Aloha Harvest, a nonprofit that rescues quality donated food and delivers it free of charge to social service agencies.

Despite unfortunate timing at the box office, with the Sep1. 11 tragedy occurring just a month before, Richard Kelly’s dark sci-fi drama Donnie Darko received critical acclaim and a cult following for its exquisitely mind-bending story, superb acting and decidedly weird vibe. If you haven’t seen it, the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal in his breakout performance as Donnie Darko, a troubled teen living in suburban Virginia. Woken up one night, he is led outside by a tall, costumed figure best described as the demonic lovechild of It’s Pennywise and a rabbit. Frank the rabbit prophesies that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. Returning home at dawn, Donnie finds that a jet engine has crashed into his bedroom. Confused? Perhaps a little intrigued? With Doris Duke Theatre screening a brand-new 4K restoration for its 15th anniversary, there’s no better time to watch this cult classic.

When mothers thrive, the community thrives. That’s the idea behind the Mom Made Market, which hosts markets in cities nationwide to give women with businesses (and families, obviously) a platform to sell goods and services, network with other entrepreneurial moms, create new friendships, meet and connect with their customers and supporters in person and, most importantly, have a good time doing it. Hawai‘i’s Mom Made Market takes place this weekend in Kaka‘ako and will feature more than 50 local clothing, accessories, beauty and food vendors.
