If you have a “Heroes never die” sticker on your laptop, or you’re just a die-hard comic fan, you’ll want to be at this convention. Comic Con Honolulu focuses on comics, movies and sci-fi, and is well-loved by gamers because of its partnership with PC Gamerz. Guests include voice actors Anjali Bhimani and Carolina Ravassa from Overwatch; Tom DeFalco, former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics; Kick-Ass co-creator John Romita Jr.; plus a full panel of actors from Netflix’s The Dragon Prince. There will be artists, concerts, costumes, tabletop games, video games and the list goes on. Don’t miss the free Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament at 4 p.m. on Friday or the cosplay contest at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Mary Wilson of The Supremes at Blue Note
Friday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 4
Mary Wilson, former member of the country’s most successful vocal group, comes to the Blue Note this weekend. The Supremes are credited with paving the way for other black musicians and for influencing other artists, including Madonna. On her own, Wilson released the Billboard hit, “Time to Move On,” and will release her fourth book in September. Do yourself a favor and pick up a ticket to see her perform the classics—“Stop! In the Name of Love,” “You Can’t Hurry Love” and “Baby Love”—albeit solo, in person.

Pacific Ink & Art Expo
Friday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 4
Time to get tatted? The Pacific Ink and Art Expo says yes. More than 400 artists will create their art at the event with rates starting at $75 per hour. Practitioners of traditional Japanese, Hawaiian and Filipino tattoos will be there, including Keli‘i Makua, the only kahuna ka uhi (priest of tattooing) in Hawai‘i. His traditional Hawaiian tattoos, or uhi, are based on cultural meaning and life experiences and created with toothed tools and a mallet. The expo will also feature hula performances and food vendors. You might even spot a tattoo TV star.

Asia Pacific Dance Festival Closing Weekend
Friday, Aug. 2, 6 to 8 p.m.
Though the two-week biennial festival ends this weekend, you can still enjoy performances from across the Pacific. Dancers from Kuala Lumpur-based ASK Dance Company, Dancers of Damelahamid (an indigenous dance company from British Columbia) and Hālau Hula Ka No‘eau will perform at the welcoming ceremony and two finale concerts. At the free welcoming ceremony, kumu hula Maelia Loebenstein Carter will call each participating group with a welcoming chant and each will respond with a dance. The same Pacific dance companies will also take the stage at the two finale shows, ʻIke Hana I and II at Kennedy Theatre.
