A celebration of art and music, this event features entertainment from Anuhea, Mākua Rothman, The Babe Rainbow and more. Buy local food, browse urban art and enjoy yoga sessions between performances. As part of the festival’s aim to Save the Beach, Love the Ocean, join the annual beach cleanup fronting Hale Koa Hotel and free beach soccer games.

Pau Hana Block Party for Literacy

Thursday, Sept. 6, 6 to 9 p.m.

Did you know that 1 in every 6 adults in Hawai‘i still struggles with reading and writing? Literacy is an essential tool for building a better life, but poverty and under-education can make learning to read and write a major challenge for adults and keiki alike. Local nonprofit Hawai‘i Literacy helps those who struggle with literacy with volunteer-run tutoring programs, English language classes and more, all offered free of charge. Help support Hawai‘i Literacy at Murphy’s Bar & Grill’s 10^th annual Pau Hana Block Party for Literacy, featuring live music by Maneki Nekos. Each $45 ticket includes two drinks, one dinner plate and your pick of delectable bite-size desserts crafted by Mignardise bakery owner Michele Fusato.

MEN Exhibit at Hawai‘i State Art Museum

Friday, Sept. 7, 6 to 9 p.m.

From Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” to Andy Warhol’s “Shot Blue Marilyn,” the female form has long been used in the visual arts and is still one of the oldest and most common motifs today. In its newest exhibit opening this Friday, the Hawai‘i State Art Museum gives the male form some time in the spotlight with works by more than 25 artists that focus solely on artistic depictions of men. The MEN exhibit kicks off with a First Friday opening reception featuring a live performance by the North Shore Ramblers. As always, admission to the museum is free, making an excellent choice for anyone who loves art, works downtown or is looking for a cheap Friday night date.

‘Ukulele Jam Session

Saturday, Sept. 8, 10 to 11 a.m.

There are so many reasons to love the ‘uke. Its portable size, bright sound and ease of learning make it one of the best instruments for beginning musicians of all ages. Find out how easy—and fun—the jumping flea can be at the Bishop Museum’s ‘Ukulele Jam Session. The event is free with museum admission and open to all. Members of the ‘Ukulele Guild of Hawai‘i will be there to share quick lessons, new techniques and tips for players, so feel free to bring your instrument for some hands-on fun. Plus, stick around for a fun kanikapila (impromptu jam session) performed by guild members, whose skills will inspire you to keep on strummin’.
