Learn what it takes to mālama the ‘āina at VegFest, a festival aimed at educating others about sustainable living. Sample healthful plant-based dishes from local businesses (Down to Earth, Peace Café, HI Cravings, ‘Ulu Mana and Himalayan Kitchen, to name a few), watch cooking demos by expert chefs and shop for earth-friendly products, all while listening to live music. In their mission to spread a plant-based lifestyle, speakers will talk about various environmental and health topics.

Aloun Farms Pumpkin Festival

Every weekend starting Saturday, Oct. 13, through Sunday, Oct. 28, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grab the family for a romp in a pumpkin patch. Enjoy free parking and hayrides around the farm, stroll through a sunflower field and pick your own bucket of fresh corn or string beans to use in your next cooking adventure. Plus, choose your own pumpkins to use for autumn decoration, pumpkin pie filling or to carve into jack-o’-lanterns—Aloun Farms’ pumpkin patch features more than a dozen varieties—and treat yourself to ‘Ewa sweet corn and goodies from other farm-style food booths.

Tip: Checks and credit cards won’t be accepted, so make sure to bring cash or a debit card (the event will have an on-site ATM).

Petwalk Pa‘ina

Saturday, Oct. 13, 5 to 9 p.m.

Animal lovers and pet owners, you’re invited to bring your furred (or feathered) bestie for some exercise, shopping and drinks. The Hawaiian Humane Society’s Petwalk Pa‘ina begins with a long- or short-course walk around Ward Village followed by its first-ever block party, held at Kolowalu Park by South Shore Market, with plenty of fun for both man and man’s best friend: food, a beer garden, shopping, live entertainment, giveaways and contests. Plus: Participants who raise $25 or more will be entered to win two tickets to see Bruno Mars perform on Nov. 8 at Aloha Stadium.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Sunday, Oct. 14, at 7 a.m.

About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer. Show your support for those battling the disease by participating in either a 5K or 1-mile walk for the cure. Register as a team or individual to help the foundation reach its goal of $150,000, which will fund low- or no-cost treatment for underserved patients, innovative clinical trials, detection and treatment research, and much more. The walk ends with giveaways, an awards ceremony and live entertainment.
