Na Leo Pilimehana Mother’s Day Concert

Na Leo Pilimehana means “the voices blending in warmth” and, fittingly, this Sunday at 1:30 p.m., the award-winning trio will fill Hawai‘i Theatre with their beautiful vocals and soul-lifting lyrics in honor of moms. The high school friends, Nalani Jenkins, Lehua Kalima and Angela Morales, who have been performing together for more than 35 years, have impressively won 23 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and recorded over two dozen CDs. Some of their greatest hits (that live in our hearts) are “Local Boys,” “Flying with Angels” and “Rest of Your Life.” Ticket prices start at $35, but if you really want to go all out for the matriarch of the fam, there’s a $75 option that includes VIP seating, a commemorative signed CD and photo opportunity with the ladies of Na Leo.

Dine-In for Mother’s Day

If you’re looking to treat mom to a great meal, see Frolic Hawai‘i’s story on dine-in and takeout menus for Mother’s Day. No surprise, restaurants are glamming up their menus with special breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner items. Bar Podmore is offering a mouthwatering prix fixe three-course brunch, with an option to level up by adding florals and sweets from Blume Ruhm. Kapa Hale is keeping it playful (and delicious) with a “mom-u-mental” roasted pork belly porchetta and “olive you, mom” olive oil cake. Indulgent to-go options are also available, including a Mother’s Day feast—petite lobster rolls, local snapper with ginger scallion sauce and New York-style cheesecake with fresh berries—from Feast by Jon Matsubara. Hawai‘i Triennial 2022 Closing Celebration

The 2022 Hawai‘i Triennial is coming to a close this weekend with an art-packed celebration at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum. As expected, the free event will welcome star artists and performers, including an exciting show by The Queeries, a University of Hawai‘i queer dance collective. Yassss! Guests will also be treated to a mask-making workshop lead by Izumi Kato, a band member of The Tetorapotz, and have a chance to don their masterpieces while rocking out to the band’s lively performance. Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Throughout May

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, local and national media will be showcasing voices from Asian American and Pacific Islander communities who have contributed to society and the arts. On May 10, PBS Hawai‘i will showcase American Masters: Waterman—Duke: Ambassador of Aloha, a film portraying the life and outstanding accomplishments of the surfing, life-saving and Olympic-winning legend, narrated by Jason Momoa. Also, on PBS this week are: Asian American Stories of Resilience and Beyond, a digital series highlighting diversity in the AAPI community; and Curtain Up! a behind-the-scenes, honest look at fifth graders from New York City’s Chinatown PS 124 theatre club rehearsing an adaptation of Frozen. McDonalds also launched their APA campaign comprising of video talks with inspirational leaders and creatives that continue to create opportunities for themselves, and other Asians, in this country.
