North Shore Ocean Fest
Saturday, June 1, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Head north for a day filled with art, food and music at the eighth annual Ocean Fest. Start with a morning 5K, but don’t take off after the race without exploring a life-sized inflatable humpback whale—inside and out—with NOAA experts. Listen to live poetry or learn to snorkel before replenishing those calories with tacos, burgers and garlic shrimp from food vendors. This event is plastic-free, so make sure to fill your water bottle.
Free, Bayview Lawn at Turtle Bay Resort, 57-091 Kamehameha Highway, Kahuku. For more information, go here.
Sunset Mele & Night Market
Friday, May 31, 4 to 9 p.m.
This free event brings the community together for an evening of low-key, family-friendly fun. Enjoy live music by a handful of Island artists, watch a screening of Aquaman, shop a pop-up marketplace featuring more than 40 local vendors (check out the full list of Sunset Mele & Night Market vendors) and more. Note that there is a $5 fee if you choose to park at the convention center.
Free, Hawai‘i Convention Center, 1801 Kalākaua Ave., Level Three Mauka Side. For more information, go here.

Chinowa Blessing for People and Pets
Sunday, June 2, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Whether your best friend is furred, feathered, scaled or shelled, all species (and faiths) are welcome during this annual day honoring the animals in our lives. Bring your leashed or caged pet, or a stuffed animal in its stead, to the Shinto shrine for a complimentary blessing. Off-site parking will be offered at Damien Memorial School with a free shuttle service to take you to and from the temple.
Free, Hawai‘i Kotohira Jinsha – Hawai‘i Dazaifu Tenmangu, 1239 Olomea St. For more information, go here.
Da Beer Can Hat
Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 23
Darrell H. Y. Lum’s classic short story takes the stage. Bobo, the protagonist of this unique local tale, navigates the world without much luck. As a mentally handicapped individual he’s faced with discrimination, harassment and the abuse of his father on a regular basis. Still, he never complains, because while Bobo may not have much, he does have one thing: a true friend.
$25, Kumu Kahua Theatre, 46 Merchant St. For more information and to purchase tickets, go here.
