Thursday, Jan. 10, through Sunday, Jan. 13

The sixth season of O‘ahu Fringe Festival arrives in Chinatown this weekend with more than 15 performances by local and visiting artists. An outlet for all types of performing artists to showcase their talents, this year’s fringe festival includes dance, theater, shadow puppetry and more (including an augmented-reality circus act, which we’re hoping is every bit as interesting as it sounds). Not all performances are keiki appropriate, so parents who want to share the experience with their little ones should attend Family Fringe Day on Sunday, which will feature the event’s family-friendly shows and discounted tickets for keiki younger than 12 years.

New Year’s ‘Ohana Festival

Sunday, Jan. 13, at 9:30 a.m.

Celebrate the Year of the Boar at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi with a day filled with traditional fare, from bentos to hand-pounded mochi and craft booths for the whole ʻohana. Besides live entertainment from several Japanese dance groups, don’t miss the Chinese lion dancers that will make their way throughout the festival grounds.

Andhadhun

Thursday, Jan. 10 and Friday, Jan. 11

If you think Bollywood is only about sappy romance and sweet dance numbers, think again. Part comedy, part crime thriller, the critically acclaimed Andhadhun tells the story of blind pianist Akash (played by Badhaai Ho’s Ayushmann Khurrana), who unwittingly becomes involved in a murder while working a private gig. Pulpy plot twists, dark humor, and, of course, some romance and music make this film an entertaining watch from start to finish.

Cat Café Pop-Up

Saturday, Jan. 12, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If you’ve ever wanted to pet a kitten while drinking boba tea, catch Popoki + Tea’s cat café pop-up this Saturday at The Public Pet in Kaimukī. This free event will allow cat lovers to meet adorable adoptable kittens and purchase cute kitty cookies and boba while they socialize.
