2017 Punahou Carnival

Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Fresh malassadas. The Tilt-a-Whirl. Slippers muddy from on-again, off-again rain showers. Eating too much. These are just a few of our favorite Punahou Carnival things, but there are many, many more. The ultra-famous private school brings back its annual fundraiser, and this year’s “Back to the ’50s” theme returns us to the era when Elvis, drive-ins and poodle skirts ruled pop culture. Expect all the quintessential Carnival features including a silent auction, white elephant tent, game booths, E.K. Fernandez rides and plenty of foods to put in your belly. Proceeds from this event go towards the school’s financial aid program. Weather forecast predicts no rain on Friday or Saturday, but we suggest packing an umbrella, anyway—you know, just in case.

Creativity is Contagious

Saturday, Feb. 4, 4 to 9:30 p.m.

“In a world of constant distractions and infinite options, the ideas that resonate—the ideas that propel us forward—are the ones that are different. Sometimes you just need inspiration,” says RISEHI (check out its video here). This group seeks to provide that inspiration at its second-ever event, Creativity Is Contagious, this Saturday in Kaka‘ako. Featured speakers include Austin Kino, apprentice navigator for the Hōkūle‘a and owner of Holokino Hawai‘i, Nā Hōku award-nominated music artist Irie Love and Kūha‘o Zane, director of design and marketing at Sig Zane Designs, who will share their experiences and perspectives on creativity in Hawai‘i’s unique landscape. Other guests include Fighting Eel designer Rona Bennett and Hawai‘i Life Real Estate co-founder Winston Welborn. Plus, shop 17 local artists and vendors at the Kama‘āina Marketplace at Kaka‘ako Agora, open to the public before and after the speaking event.

Third Annual Jersey Fun Run

Saturday, Feb. 4 at 8 a.m.

You and dear ol’ dad may not see eye-to-eye sometimes. You don’t get why he insists on cutting his own hair—badly—rather than paying $15 at Supercuts. He can’t understand how you can name all 240 creatures in Pokémon Go, but not what you ate this morning for breakfast. And what the heck is a meme, anyway? But throw you two into the bleachers at a UH volleyball game, and the differences melt away as you cheer your team on in eerie, twinlike synchronicity and matching face paint. It’s true that those who cheer together, stay together, and the Jersey Fun Run at Aloha Stadium gives you an opportunity to celebrate the joy of sports fandom. Show off your team colors as the course takes you through parts of the stadium usually off limits to fans, and participate in lively games and challenges. Prize giveaways, music and more round out the ultimate family-friendly fan experience. Proceeds from this event support Special Olympics Hawai‘i, which holds more than 40 competitions throughout the year.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sunday Supper

Sunday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m.

When it comes to comfort food, nothing beats a meal of homemade, stick-to-your-bones Southern cooking. This Sunday, 12^th Ave Grill hosts its first buttermilk fried chicken Sunday supper of the year, and, in this cold (by Hawai‘i standards) weather, we could use a little fattening up. For $30 a head, the restaurant serves up a scrumptious family-style dinner of crème fraîche mashed potatoes, pork sausage gravy, sautéed Ho Farms rainbow swiss chard and house-made biscuits like mom used to make. A dessert of chocolate cookie sundae with condensed milk gelato, sea salt caramel and hot fudge sauce tops off the meal. We suggest wearing your best mu‘umu‘u: comfortable and easy to fall asleep in, plus, it’ll hide the post-feast food baby.
