What’s Open and Closed in Honolulu for New Year’s Day on Sunday and Monday
Your guide to which city services will be suspended Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, 2023.

Sunday, Jan. 1, New Year’s Day
What’s Open
- The Ala Wai, ‘Ewa Villages and Ted Makalena golf courses will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. for 18-hole play and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for nine-hole play.
- The Honolulu Zoo will be open.
Available Services
- Emergency ambulance, fire, lifeguard, medical examiner and police services will be on duty.
- TheBus will operate on a Sunday schedule. Visit thebus.org for routes and other information.
- Priority Mail Express mail will be delivered.
Closed or Canceled Services
- Refuse will not be collected.
- Transfer stations, convenience centers, H-POWER and the Waimānalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will not be open.
- The Neal S. Blaisdell Center box office will be closed.
- The People’s Open Markets will not be held.
- All satellite city halls and driver licensing centers will be closed.
- The Honolulu Botanical Gardens and Hanauma Bay will be closed.
- The Kahuku, Pali and West Loch golf courses will be closed.
- State public libraries will be closed.
- Post offices will be closed and mail will not be delivered or picked up from blue collection boxes.
Traffic and Parking Regulations
- There will be free on-street parking, excluding the meters on Kalākaua Avenue along Queen Kapi‘olani Park, metered parking lots and certain Waikīkī streets.
- Parking in Lanikai will be restricted over the long weekend, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On Monday, Jan. 2, New Year’s Day (observed)
What’s Open
- The Honolulu Botanical Gardens and the Honolulu Zoo will be open.
- Golf courses will resume normal business hours.
- A few state public libraries will be open: ‘Aiea (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), Hawai‘i Kai (noon to 7 p.m.) and Makawao (noon to 7 p.m.).

- Refuse will not be collected. Leave your gray refuse cart curbside until it can be picked up; if you have manual refuse collection, hold onto it until your next scheduled pickup. If Monday is your usual blue or green bin day, you’ll have to just hold onto your recycling and green waste until your next scheduled pickup—these days will not be made up.
- Post offices will be closed and mail will not be delivered or picked up from blue collection boxes.
