Pop Art

What: Son of a gun, it's that time of the year again: Father's Day, aka the Big Guy gets to see how much he really means to you. And now, with Royal Hawaiian Center's Instagram contest, you get the chance to show the world—while also entering to win some sweet gifts that are sure to beat out that tie from last year. We're talking an $800 gift certificate from Leather Soul, a Salvatore Ferragamo men's leather belt, a Wolfgang's Steakhouse Big Father's Day Special Brunch for four and tickets to Legends In Concert Waikiki. Just snap the father-of-all selfies with your man-among-men, tag it with #RHCdad and follow @RoyalHwnCtr to enter the contest. And get creative with as many photo montages, slideshows and videos as you like. After all—once you pop, you just can't stop!

When: Contest ends on June 12 at 11:59 p.m. Winners will be announced the following day, June 13 at 10 a.m.

Details: Find more info at royalhawaiiancenter.com.

When: Friday, May 30, 4–9 p.m.

Where: South Street Lot, 555 South St.

Details: Call 772-3020 or visit eatthestreethawaii.com.

Attend

Domo Art-igato

What: If there's one island chain we Hawaii denizens love more than our own, it's the Land of the Rising Sun, which makes this weekend's ARTafterDARK "Rakugaki" theme perfect. Think "graffiti-meets-classic-Japanese-art" with a hip night of DJs, tasty Asian fare, cocktails, break dancers, multimedia artists and, of course, stunning art pieces. The museum's Light from Shadow: Gold in Japanese Art exhibition will be open and guests will have the option to make stamp art and win a Museum of Art prize pack. Bonzai!

When: Friday, May 30, 6–9 p.m.

Where: 900 S. Beretania
 St.
Details: $10 for non-members, free for members. Call 532-8700 or visit honolulumuseum.org for more details.

There's Something Fishy Going On

What: Family: can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em (especially in a real estate market like Oahu's, amirite?). Kumu Kahua Theatre's Koi, Like the Fish! takes a look at family conflicts through the story of a young woman and her children, who move in with her sick uncle Koi to care for him. Koi, however, has trouble adjusting from a life of solitude to one jam-packed with family. Originally produced on Maui, this Oahu premiere is a realistic look at the complicated love/hate relationship that family life can lead to.

When: May 29–June 29, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8 p.m., Sunday 2 p.m.

Where: 46 Merchant St.
Details: Tickets range from $5–$20. Visit kumukahua.org or call 536-4441

Witchy Woman

What: Kudos to Disney's casting agents, because no one could play our favorite evil queen quite as Angelina Jolie will in the upcoming Maleficent film. See the sympathetic background story of the dark sorceress from Sleeping Beauty, who apparently used to be super nice, guys, seriously, until her kingdom got invaded. Then her heart turned black and she succumbed to evil—somehow picking up some epic green flame skills along the way. Blah blah blah—Angie's prosthetic cheekbones and some witchin' special effects. Plus, everyone will be talking about it on Monday.

When: Opens Thursday, May 29, at 7 p.m.
Where: Regal and Consolidated Theatres

Details: Visit disney.com to watch the trailer.

Reddit, Get Set, Go

What: We *looove* Reddit AMAs. (That's "Ask Me Anything" for you internet noobs.) Getting to ask Barack Obama to Bill Nye the Science Guy to Snoop Dogg/Lion anything? I mean, anything? It's what the internet was made for. Which is why we're super stoked to be able to pick the brain of author and, according to Reddit, WWII espionage expert, Alan Furst. Finally, we'll get to learn all those spy secrets we've been dreaming about since we were kids watching James Bond.

When: Monday, June 2, 8 a.m. Hawaii time.

Where: reddit.com

Details: Furst has written the novels The Spies of Warsaw, and The New York Times bestseller, Mission to Paris. Read more about the author at alanfurst.net

The Ber-Food-A Triangle

What: If you really are what you eat, you don't even want think about what you are when you get the late night munchies (Jack In The Box and grocery store cupcakes? Ew). Chef Dan Barber delves into the modern diet with his new book The Third Plate: Field Notes on the Future of Food. In it, he challenges both the "first plate" (meat-centered) and "second plate" (organic, grass-fed meats and local produce) models that dominate Western tables, instead focusing on long-term productivity and a marriage of vegetable, grain and livestock production. Talk about food for thought.

When: Released May 20
