Wild at Art

What: It’s been one colorful week of Pow! Wow! events throughout the city, but the annual art fest is almost at a close—but don’t expect it to go out without a bang. They’re throwing a killer concert to close out the annual festivities featuring The Green, DJ Babu and Rakaa Iriscience of Dilated Peoples, Likkle Mai, Eli Mac, Taimane, Cipha Sounds and the Pow! Wow! School of Music. Head over for hours of music and hit up some food trucks. There will even be breakdancing competitions to check out, an art battle and more. You may even get those creative juices flowing and want to join in on the action! OK, maybe not—but you can still get inspired as an observer.

Wood You Be Mine?

What: We’ve got hearts and pretty things on the mind this week, obviously. So when we heard about the latest trunk show happening at the quintessential purveyor of pretty trinkets, Magnolia, we were quick to pop it on our calendar. This Valentine’s Day-themed affair will feature wood works by artist Nadia Fairlamb, who uses discarded local tropical hardwoods to create unique and exquisite wooden hearts and mirrors. In addition, local artist Lenei Sousa-Naipo will have her Island-inspired jewelry up for sale. Stop to talk story with these talented ladies, who will be on hand to show off their latest creations and discuss their artistic inspiration.

What: Bauble-loving mermaids and ocean-minded fashionistas better alert their S.O.s. Waialua-based Vanessa Pack Jewelry is heading down to town this weekend for a trunk show at the swanky new Bloomingdale’s, and the team wants you to swing by and join the party. The designer herself will also be on site to chat with guests about her creative process and help you—or your boo—choose the perfect piece this Valentine’s Day. Pack’s jewelry is chock-full of fun, Hawai‘i themes and imagery (think whale fins, coral branches and sunrise shells) with hammered and precious-metal elements that add a luxe feel. Talk about love at first sight.

Music to My Ears

What: Hear that? That melody on the wind? Sounds like strum-thing big. Yep, it’s the ‘Ukulele Picnic in Hawai‘i event, which will welcome well-known ‘ukulele players from Hawai‘i, Japan and across the world to make music all Sunday long. The festivities start tuning up at 9 a.m., and guests can take advantage of a variety of booths featuring Hawaiian crafts, food and activities for kids, as well as a stellar lineup of ‘ukulele masters. And, since we know you’re looking to be the next master yourself, you won’t want to miss entering the raffle to win a luxury ‘ukulele for yourself. Plus, all funds raised from the event will benefit the ‘Ukulele Museum, so the first step to becoming the next ‘uke superstar also helps benefit a good cause.

What: Valentine’s Day is going to be all kinds of chocolate, steak, lobster, cookies, more chocolate, Champagne, even more chocolate … you get our drift. Entering the Great Aloha Run, which takes place on President’s Day, would have been a great way to get in shape! Ulp. How about the next best thing? Before your night of loving indulgence, check out the Kaiser Permanente Great Aloha Run Expo, which is all about a healthy lifestyle. The expo will be action packed and showcase health and fitness options that will help you feel empowered to improve your quality of life. Sounds pretty good, right? Oh, and here's even more good news: If you get really inspired, you can still register for the next day's run at the expo.

Artsy Party

What: Chinatown was all lit up last weekend with Chinese New Year, but things aren’t completely quiet yet. Don’t miss DiscoverArt, the new monthly event that brings together artists and performers from around the Chinatown community for a festive day of culture, art and activities. Kids and adults alike will find lots to keep them busy, with drawing, painting and crafts booths, theater, music and other interactive activities. House of Aria will join the fun with a trunk show, Madre Chocolate will feature live music, the Hawai‘i State Art Museum will welcome crochet art group The Fuzz and Nextdoor will have local art on display, to mention a few. Now, that’s one pretty artsy fartsy Saturday.
