The Best To Shop and Do This Weekend

Lei Chic’s guide to the weekend’s best events.

Attend

Hit Me With Your Best Shot

What: Brace yourself, Hawai‘i, because you’re about to get hit (again) by Pow! Wow! This year, the international art festival will bring more than 100 internationally renowned and up-and-coming artists to the Honolulu streets. It all starts tonight at The Study, where guests, artists and culture enthusiasts will hear Pow! Wow! founders Jasper Wong and Kamea Hadar speak, followed by an unveiling of a new mural by Hadar in Addiction Nightclub.
When: Tonight, Jan. 29 at 8:15 p.m.
Where: The Study at The Modern Honolulu
Details: The mural unveiling will happen at 9:15 p.m. The rest of the festival events will take place Feb. 7–17. Find out more at powwowhawaii.com.

Write

Love, To The Letter

What: It’s that time of year when everyone has googly eyes, and hearts are starting to pop up everywhere you go. You can try to fight it, but nobody likes a Valentine Scrooge. Get into the sappy spirit of things by participating in the Simply Wood Studios Love Letter Contest. Pen your most flowery, most Shakespearean, 300-word love letter to your romantic muse (or use one from the past). Then, submit it to penaloveletter@gmail.com by midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 10 for a chance to win a Valentine’s Day treat for two: a gift certificate for a his and hers Hawaiian koa and leather pen set by Lau Lau Woodworks (worth $400), a scented candle and body lotion gift basket, and a heart-shaped box of chocolates.
When: Submit by midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 10
Where: Email your letters to penaloveletter@gmail.com
Details: Winners will be announced on Feb. 13

Shop

Indiana Jonesing

What: I think it’s pretty obvious what we’ll be doing this weekend.  With the new Anthropologie store opening on Sunday, we haven’t been this excited since … oh, probably when Urban Outfitters opened last fall. We’ve already started clearing out our kitchen and living room to make space for all the cute little home wares we will definitely pick up. Oh, and the bikinis? Don’t even get us started on the Swim Shop.

When: Sunday, Feb. 1, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.

Where: Ala Moana Center, near Williams-Sonoma

Details: Call 955-9517 for more information.

Learn

It Just Clicks

What: Live and learn—that’s our mantra, and one of the reasons we love the idea of lynda.com, where you can take online lessons in a variety of fields, including graphic design, marketing and programming. Easy to access, works on your schedule—what’s not to love? Especially now that Lynda is sharing the knowledge with a variety of free classes for a limited time, you literally have no excuses.

When: Free classes through Monday, Feb. 2

Where: lynda.com

Details: Check out the list of free classes here.

Shop

Wang Fun

What: Remember all the money you saved with that H&M x Alexander Wang collab? What’s a girl to do with all that leftover dough when you’ve been getting luxury designs at bargain prices? We have an idea: Alexander Wang has now teamed up with furniture design label Poltrona Frau for an understated, black, edgy, totally perfect (in other words, totally Wang) three-piece collection. Don’t expect Target prices here, though. It’s $8,800 for a leather beanbag chair that puts our college dorm room beanbag chair to sad, sad shame.

Where: Call (212) 777-7592 to buy.

Details: Read about the collab on The Wall Street Journal.

Exercise

Wild and Free

What: We know, we know: Nothing tastes as good as being fit feels (we modified your line just a tad, Kate). And yet—cream puffs and post-holiday belly baggage have been winning over our exercise regimen. Kiss that goodbye, because nothing gets you motivated like free ways to stay active. This weekend, take advantage of the YMCA January promotion and try out any of the eight branches for free! Heck, go tonight, tomorrow and Saturday if you want to.

When: Through Saturday, Jan. 31

Where: Register online here to get your pass.

Details: Pro tip: Four sessions of personal training are only $100—until the end of January.
