Manoa Valley Theatre’s Always… Patsy Cline made me want to go back a second time for more. Zenia Zambrano Moura is outstanding as Patsy Cline. There is no recorded music here. Everything is live. The Bodacious Bobcats Band is on-stage to entertain you throughout the show, while Moura’s beautiful Cline-like voice sings at least 27 of Patsy Cline’s best-known songs, including “I Fall To Pieces,” “You Belong To Me,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Crazy.” It feels as if you are attending a concert, rather than a play at this Manoa Valley Theatre 40th Anniversary season opener.
Always… Patsy Cline, written by Ted Swindley, is based on a true story that follows Louise Seger’s passion for Patsy Cline’s music. Louise is an outspoken, middle-aged single mom living in Texas who happens to meet Patsy Cline when she arrives to perform at a Houston honky tonk. Although only meeting for one night, Louise and Patsy’s shared experiences of heartbreak and motherhood bring them together in a long-lasting friendship that continues long after in letters that were signed, “Love always, Patsy Cline.”
Hooting, hollering, whistling and dancing are all welcome at this performance. A makeshift bar, made to look like a Texas saloon, is set-up stage-right serving real drinks, while you sit cabaret-style around tables and watch Patsy Cline perform on-stage live at The Esquire Ballroom, The Arthur Godfrey Show and even at The Grand Ole Opry.
