Dr. Gregory Yim, Windward Pediatrics

For more than 25 years, Dr. Greg Yim has used a philosophy of compassionate care, combined with the latest advancements in technology, to treat children suffering from neurological conditions. Now, he is proud to offer an innovative new therapy designed specifically with young patients in mind.

Magnetic e-Resonance therapy (MeRT) is a new breakthrough technology in neuroscience that combines transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with EEG guidance, creating a noninvasive treatment to improve neural processing time and overall neural function. Anecdotal evidence has shown MeRT to be effective, safe and—most importantly gentle. With the patient resting comfortably on their parents’ lap, a technician holds the magnet about two inches away from the child’s forehead, using controlled magnetic fields to activate distinct areas of the brain associated with communication and function. Treatments are tailored to each child’s unique brain, take only an hour and are done in-office.

Dr. Yim is especially thrilled to utilize MeRT to treat children with: Autism spectrum disorder, which, in treatment centers on the Mainland, have seen improvements in behavior, eye contact, mood, social interaction and language; ADHD, as a way to improve executive function and potentially decrease reliance on medication; and traumatic brain injury, including sport-related injuries.

Starting July 2021, Dr. Yim will offer MeRT at Synapse, Hawai‘i’s Brain Treatment Center. “The synapse is the space between brain cells, where the magic happens,” says Dr. Yim. “It’s where nerve cells communicate and what allows the brain to function as one organ.” Like its namesake, the new treatment center is dedicated to improving communication for its patients—by forming new connections in the brain, and by giving struggling children a chance to overcome their symptoms and connect with those around them in a new, meaningful way.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is currently FDA-approved for major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. All other treatment for other conditions listed above are “off-label.” For more information on Synapse, visit www.synapsehawaii.com or call (808) 754-1027.
