Built on deep relationships and personalized attention, Holy Nativity School’s motto is character, heart and excellence. Rooted in the Episcopal tradition of respect and inclusion, Holy Nativity is a hidden gem in East O‘ahu that celebrated its 70th anniversary last year.
Now expanded to eighth grade, Holy Nativity School takes pride in knowing that its students graduate well-equipped for the challenges of Hawai‛i’s finest high schools. As a neighborhood school, HNS recognizes that learning happens best in an environment of respect and trust; where every child is truly known. Alumni share time and again that at HNS they felt seen, they felt that they mattered, and that they had a voice.
The curriculum follows current neuroscience and research, delivering a program that ensures academic rigor, while also nurturing social and emotional maturity. At HNS, students gain leadership experience within an integrated, project-based curriculum. Talented teachers use their own creativity to develop programs that inspire students to become independent learners with strong metacognitive skills. All teachers use yoga and other mindfulness tools to increase self-awareness and self-regulation.
Acknowledging the strengths and talents of each individual, HNS ensures that students enjoy weekly enrichment classes in music, fine arts, physical education and religion. Experiential learning engages students through unique and diverse opportunities. As the first school in Hawai`i to incorporate Computational Thinking into the curriculum, HNS students are engaged in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity using logical thought, precision and data management—invaluable skills required in today’s classrooms and tomorrow’s careers.
HNS is small by design, recognizing that class size and teacher to student ratios matter. The small one-class-per-grade school includes facilities often seen at larger schools—three playfields, a full-size gymnasium, dedicated art room, music room and computer lab—on a beautiful and open, safe and quiet two-acre campus. A student-designed, eco-friendly playground was built by the school and local community. The Great Pumpkin Festival, Holy Nativity School’s long standing annual community event each October looks forward to welcoming families to pick pumpkins, play games, and more.
For the 2020-2021 school year, we have a flexible plan that is possible because of our intentional limit on size. While aiming to deliver our school program in person with all appropriate health and safety measures in place, we are carefully monitoring events and remain ready to respond to eventualities, including partial and temporary remote learning. After the successful implementation of remote learning in the final quarter of last year, teachers are prepared to sustain students, Keiki 3’s to 8th grade, in a well-rounded curriculum.
Prospective families are encouraged to contact the school for a personalized meeting. Find out what makes HNS so special and how your family can start the process to join the Holy Nativity School community.
