A Good Vintage

What: A few things actually do get better with time: cheese, wine and select sweet retro fashions. Guess which one is our favorite? (Cheese comes a close second.) Tomorrow, you can get your vintage fix at Fishcake Hawai‘i, one of our favorite little Honolulu nooks for contemporary art, furniture and curios. The Fishcake gange will be throwing it back with a Vintage Fishsale, which will feature fashionable pieces from Rue Vintage Rose and Catherine’s Closet, tarot readings, music, and coffee by Morning Glass. Sounds like a day that’s going to really be the bee’s knees.
When: Saturday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Where: Fishcake, 307 Kaimani St.
Details: Call 593-1231 for more information.

Cross the Lion

What: You’ve popped the firecrackers, eaten the mochi soup and guzzled that Champagne. Next on the list? Chinese New Year, of course. Head down to Ward Village Shops for a colorful celebration of new beginnings, complete with workshops, demonstrations and food. Performances include lion dances from the Wah Ngai Lion Dance Association, a martial arts demonstration, a lion dance pole performance and other cultural dance exhibitions. Munch on dim sum and jai from Mr. Egg Roll, get a closer look at the dance troupe’s lion heads with the kids and take in a Chinese calligraphy demonstration as well. OK—now we’re ready to start the year.
When: Saturday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Where: Ward Village Shops, main stage near The Old Spaghetti Factory
Details: Visit wardvillageshops.com for more information.

The Long Contour

What: We hate to break it to you, but you’ll never be able to achieve those larger-than-life cheekbones Angelina sported in Maleficent—they used prosthetics for that little camera trick. The good news? You can give yourself a structured (and much more natural) look with some slick contouring skills. Having trouble mastering this trendy technique? Head over to Sephora for a totally free contouring and highlighting class from the beauty experts. Learn the must-know tips on how to sculpt, define and slim your face, and then grab some of the best tools, products and palettes on the market with recommendations from the artists. (We personally love the Kat Von D. Shade and Light palette.) High-fashion mug, here we come.
When: Sunday, Jan. 31, 8–10 a.m.
Where: Sephora, Ala Moana Center
Details: Free. Call 944-9797 for more information and to reserve your spot.

Make

We Heart You

What: We’ve got hearts on the mind! Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day is just around the bend and we’re obviously already trying to figure out how many paper heart buntings and rose-shaped pastries we can make before then. Add another to the list with this fun workshop at Na Mea Hawai‘i, where you can learn how to make a heart-shaped lauhala fan to keep your Galentine or Valentine cool come spring. It’s a totally cute departure from the go-to red-and-pink construction paper we’re right now buried in.
When: Saturday, Jan. 30, 1–5 p.m.
Where: Na Mea Hawai‘i, Ward Village Shops
Details: $30. Seats are limited, so call 492-4457 ASAP.

Cute To the Chase

What: Art After Dark just got a little bit cuter—OK, a whole lot cuter. This month’s theme, Kawaii Hawai'i, is the perfect complement to the Harajuku: Tokyo Street Fashion exhibit going on right now at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Browse the styles, then check out the book signing and meet-and-greet with Misako Aoki, President of the Japan Lolita Association. Get your Harajuku makeup done by Motives-Hawai'i, see a Harajuku-inspired fashion show, and chill out to the house beats and J-Pop mixes from DJ Jem and DJ Modular. Asian-inspired bites including bibimbap musubi, Taiwanese pork belly musubi, Nametake soybean musubi, kim chee and pickled daikon will be provided.
When: Friday, Jan. 29, 6–9 p.m.
Where: Honolulu Museum of Art, 900 S. Beretania St.
Details: $25. Free for museum members. Visit honolulumuseum.org for more information.

Eat

Down to the Grinds

What: Lucky to live Hawai'i? Don’t we know it. We hit the jackpot, so we’re always looking for reasons to celebrate our Island heritage—especially when that celebration includes food (which it usually does). And, at this Friday's Lū'au-themed Eat the Street event, there’s another reason to celebrate: the street fair's five-year anniversary. Toast to its success with goodies from local street food trucks and vendors, including All Kine Grindz, Aloha Pops, Wieners Gone Wild, Beyond Burgers, Crazy Country Corn and Elena's Filipino. Chefs will be whipping up lū'au-themed dishes, as well as fare from their regular menus. Talk about broke da mout'.
When: Friday, Jan. 29, 5–10 p.m.
Where: Makers and Tasters, 1011 Ala Moana Blvd.
Details: Free. Visit eatthestreethawaii.com for more information.
