Lei Chic's picks for the weekend's best events.

SHOP

Closet Case

What: Mikinola is like the closet of that hip friend who always has the cutest, latest clothes from cool, local designers as well as modern mainland ones. Imagine if that friend were celebrating her birthday, and you have this Saturday’s trunk show. The party will include a sale, wine and pūpū, and you’ll be able to snare the latest from beach-chic brand Indah’s latest collection as your own little favor for yourself. Now that’s a party you can get behind.
When: Saturday, Oct. 11, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Where: Mikinola, Koko Marina Shopping Center, 7192 Kalaniana‘ole Highway
Details: Check out our article about Mikinola opening here, from way back in 2012.

Cool Times

What: After these blisteringly hot last couple of months, you could really use a cool night. Take a drive to the rainy Windward Side for the street festival and wellness fair Cool Kailua Nights, where you'll be able to score new art pieces from Lauren Roth and all-natural beauty products by Natural Aloha. Even cooler? There will be  giveaways, carnival rides and food. Plus, proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit The Boys & Girls Club of Hawai'i Windward Clubhouse and Castle Medical Center’s Oncology Clinic. It’s the perfect mix of being cool while still having that warm, fuzzy feeling.
When: Saturday, Oct. 11, 4:30–9:30 p.m.
Where: Whole Foods Parking Lot, 629 Kailua Road
Details: Visit coolkailuanights.com for more information.

WATCH

Down Town

What: Courtyard Cinema and the Hawai'i International Film Festival are teaming up to bring cinephiles a free screening of A Long Way Down, about four suicidal people who pledge to postpone their suicides together for six weeks. It’s based on the book by Nick Hornby, so you already know it’s going to have all kinds of heartwarming characters and dark comedy—score! Tickets have run out, but you can still go on standby. Another reason (other than it being free, hello) to put in the standby effort? Pierce Brosnan, the beloved James Bond you grew up with, is one of the main stars.
When: Thursday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m., so get there early to get in line.
Where: IBM Building, 1240 Ala Moana Blvd.
Details: And hey, even if you miss standby, you can still check out other awesome HIFF films at the festival at the end of the month.

SHOP

Record Sales

What: Shopping for shoes. Shopping for clothes. Shopping for bags. Is it just us or is this getting a little boring? Ha! Just kidding. But seriously, this weekend, snag your chance to shop for some vinyl at the launch party of the Secret Record Store presence in About the Goods. The Secret Record Store "annex" in About The Goods will rotate its collection monthly, starting with hip-hop albums this month. The party will also have DJs and refreshments. Plus, it’s totally free and you’ll love the chance to browse the cool collection of clothing at About The Goods in case you have a shopping relapse.

Where: 930 McCully St., Suite 203

CREATE

True Blue

What: Feeling blue? Us too—in a good way. This weekend, CHAI Studio will host a scarf-dying workshop, using all-natural indigo for a sweet DIY project. Indigo has a pretty fashionable backstory—it was used in India, Greece and Rome for luxury products as far back as 3300 B.C. and is known today for its role in iconic blue jeans. Learn more about the history of this stylish plant at the event.
When: Sunday, Oct. 12, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or 2–4 p.m.
Where: CHAI Studio, Ward Warehouse
Details: $20. Materials and light refreshments provided.

Sure beats having a pen pal.
