6 Ways to Get Festive This Weekend

Lei Chic’s guide to the weekend’s best events.

Candy (Sugar)cane

What: Holiday cookies vs. holiday sales. Hot cocoa vs. spiked eggnog. Meeting Santa vs. finally getting to see the new Star Wars movie. You and the kiddos have different reasons for loving the Christmas season, but Sugarcane Shop’s book reading this weekend is a good way to give both of you what you want. Island Toes author Christin Lozano and illustrator Mariko Meritt will be at the store for a reading and book signing, which kids will love (not to mention the free juice and doughnuts). Moms will love the complimentary mimosas and 15 percent off storewide until noon. Everybody wins. Talk about a merry Christmas.
When: Sunday, Dec. 19, 10:30 a.m.
Where: 1137 11th Ave.
Details: Call 739-2263 for more information.

Blades of Glory

What: Ice skating in the middle of a tropical city, thanks to Ward Winter Village’s ice skating rink? Pretty damn merry. Ice skating while the coolest (see what we did there?) animated movie ever, Frozen, screens behind you, while you and fellow Elsa-lovers sing along to “Let It Go”? Downright magical. (Even better than this, dare we say?) There will be two screening times for the Frozen Sing Along on Ice, but only a limited number of skaters allowed in for each. And, since you know every kid under 7 in the city will want to be there, make sure you come early to snag tickets.
When: Friday, Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Where: IBM Building Courtyard
Details: Call 840-9420 for more information. One hundred twenty skaters maximum allowed in per screening.

To a Tea

What: Not that you ever need an excuse to turn up the fancy factor, but just in case: It’s the holidays, duh. Practice keeping those pinkies up in preparation for Stage’s holiday low tea this weekend. Not only will you get the restaurant’s signature classy-AF low tea (complete with tiers of tiny sandwiches and tidbits), guests will be treated to the elegant stylings of harpist Pumehana, a holiday gift bag, a complimentary glass of Champagne and exclusive Christmas sweets. Forget hot toddies—we’ll take this pretty little setup any day.
When: Saturday, Dec. 19. Seating is between 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
Where: Lime Lounge, 1250 Kapi‘olani Ave.
Details: $38.95 per person. Call 237-5429 to make reservations. RSVP deadline is today.

All of the Lights

What: So Kanye probably wasn’t talking about Hawai‘i Kai’s Annual Festival of Lights Boat Parade when he sang “All of the Lights,” but we still think it’s pretty fly. This year, the magical evening will include holiday entertainment from Hālau Hula Mai Ka Pu‘uwai and a concert by John Cruz. Worried about not dressing jolly enough? The first 1,000 attendees will receive a complimentary light pin to get them looking festive. Then, at 6:10 p.m., the real spectacle begins, as the elaborately decorated and lit up boats parade through the Hawai‘i Kai marina.
When: Saturday, Dec. 19, 4–8 p.m.
Where: Hawai‘i Kai Towne Center Marina Stage
Details: Call 396-0796 for more information.

Wild at Art

What: “Wait, what? Christmas is next week? Um …  help?” OK, calm down. We don’t even want to know how you’ve managed to miss the signs (we literally can’t drive through Honolulu without seeing Christmas everywhere—and we love it!), but all is not lost yet, especially since the Holidaze Chinatown Market isn’t until tomorrow. Art+Flea teamed up with Mayor Kirk Caldwell and the Office of Economic Development to produce this bad boy, which will bring in more than 60 local vendors for your gift-buying needs, including Nalu Swimwear, Avant Pop, Paula Beltz Creations and more. Plus, Marks Garage will host a scavenger hunt to win a Bar 35 gift card or tickets to the upcoming Dirty South concert, KTUH will entertain the crowd and Secret Record Store will be there with a pop-up.
When: Saturday, Dec. 19, noon–5 p.m.
Where: Nu‘uanu Avenue and Pauahi Street
Details: Free. Visit the Holidaze Chinatown Market Facebook page for more information.

In Good Spirits

What: Tons of candy: check. Lots of fashionable closet additions: check. Toys for days: check. You’ve got most of your gifts at this point but, looking at your stash, you could use a few more bundles with a bit more soul. Lily Lotus’ holiday trunk show is the perfect place to find them. Local vendors will be bringing oodles of healing and uplifting gifts for the wellbeing gurus on your list, such as blessing rocks, art blocks, prints, crystals and healing stones. There will also be a complimentary coffee and snack bar. Now that is some lovely Christmas spirit.
When: Saturday, Dec. 19, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Where: 3632 Wai‘alae Ave.
Details: Call 277-1724 for more information.
