6 Things to Do This Weekend

Lei Chic’s guide to the weekend’s best events.

Cut It Out

What: Fancy yourself the next Alexander Wang? Today’s your lucky day. The fashion design experts at The Cut Collective are inviting fashionable creatives to apply for the Creative Lab Fashion Immersive program, a five-day intensive workshop that provides in-depth mentorship on how to make it in the Hawai‘i and global fashion markets, as well as the opportunity to be considered for inclusion in a major Honolulu fashion event.  If selected, you’ll deepen your knowledge of the craft and learn how to increase investment and create, produce, market and monetize your creations. Workshop mentors and instructors include designers Bliss Lau and Allison Izu Song, our very own fashion editors, Stacey Makiya and Brie Thalmann, Eden in Love founder Tanna Dang and public relations guru Bree Dallwitz, among others.
When: Application deadline is Friday, July 10.
Where: Submit your application in PDF format to cl-fi@thecutcollectivehi.com.
Details: Call 497-8400 for more information.

Daze and Confused

What: The latest collection by kids’ brand Oopsy Daze, Le Gang, is already something to rap about, but the kick-off party tonight—not to mention the cool, kid-oriented workshops for little ones two years old and up happening throughout the weekend—are what’s really making us hip-hop for joy. Enjoy food, drinks and the musical stylings of Kid DJ tonight, then get your shop on with 20 percent off at the Oopsy Daze pop-up, open 10 a.m.–6 p.m. all weekend, followed by workshops for your little artist-to-be. Even cooler, there’s a different workshop theme each day: Andy Warhol on Saturday and Van Gogh on Sunday.
When: Friday, June 26, 5–8 p.m.
Where: Lana Lane Studios, 327 Lana Lane
Details: Sign up for workshops through the weekend at aloha@oopdydazekids.com.

Show 'Em Up

What: November’s HONOLULU Fashion Week cannot get here fast enough, amirite? In the meantime, get your fashion fix at HIDESIGNCOMMUNE, a fashion show and marketplace combo that’s all about our favorite thing: local fashion. It’s a totally free, not-for-profit event, so make sure you check out the new products and styles that local designers will be showcasing in a modern showroom setup designed by Curate Décor + Design. Some of our favorite cutting-edge designers will be repping their work, including Salt Liko, Moon Collective, Issa de’ Mar, M33Ms, S.Tory Standards, B. D’Angelo and more.
When: Saturday, June 27, 6–9:30 p.m.
Where: Kaka‘ako Agora, 441 Cooke St.
Details: Visit the HIDESIGNCOMMUNE page for more information.

This Will Shock You

What: Perfect face. Perfect body. Perfect L.A. social life. This girl had it all, until she contracted toxic shock syndrome after using a tampon during a routine-period-gone-awry. After aharrowing experience that included a heart attack and leg amputation, she’s on a mission to spread awareness about this potential danger of tampons. The scariest part of her story? How much it hits close to home for those of us who take tampons for granted. Taboo subject or not, it’s a definite must-read for modern women.
Where: vice.com
Details: Read more about tampons and toxic shock syndrome on the United States Food and Drug Administration website.

Sidewalk on the Wild Side

What: We never need an excuse to head to the Windward Side for a shopping trip to Olive Boutique in Kailua. This too-cute, too-pretty shop has all the perfect dresses, jewelry and trinkets to keep us ladies looking and feeling good. But throw a trunk show by juleslosangeles into the mix and going east shoots to the top of our weekend agenda. This brand of classy, minimalist looks with unexpected details (think side slits and cowl necks and asymmetrical necklines) is just what we need to keep cool from office to pauhana.
When: Saturday, June 27, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Where: 43 Kihapai St.
Details: Call 263-9919 for more information.

Wild West

What: OK, townies: Get your road trippin’ face on. You’ll want to head out to the West Side this weekend in order to shop the latest looks from Kini Zamora. We are loving his Hawai‘i-inspired aesthetic and comfy, breezy silhouettes, plus they’re absolutely perfect for summertime in the Islands. As a bonus, a slew of other vendors will be joining Zamora, including Younique and Keali‘i Kreations, and Chat’s Sweets and Tea Girls, which will each be providing goodies to eat.
When: Saturday, June 27, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Where: 91-224 Puanohu Place
Details: For more info, call 520-1415.
