12 Must-See Photos of Hawai‘i-Born ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Jason Momoa

Hawai‘i-born Jason Momoa is known for his role as Khal Drogo in the hit HBO fantasy TV series “Game of Thrones.” But did you know he also starred in “Baywatch” and other hit shows too? Join us on this blast from the past.

We couldn’t help but squeal when we heard our very own Honolulu-born Jason Momoa would be starring as Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming superhero blockbuster, Justice League, slated for November 2017.

You might best remember Momoa from his riveting performance as Kahl Drogo, the dreamiest barbarian East of Westoros on Game of Thrones. We couldn’t help but recall him on Baywatch Hawai‘i and Fox’s prime-time soap North Shore (anyone recall that guilty pleasure?), both filmed only driving distances away.

Reminisce with us and click on for more photos of Jason Momoa, from his present bad-boy self (check out the trailer for Wolves) to 1999 when he first rose to local fame as Hawaii’s “Model of the Year.”

12. Aquaman (2016)

Although Jason Momoa is denying rumors that he might be playing Aquaman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, that does not stop us from dreaming.

11. Wolves (2014)

We’ve only seen the trailer, but we’ve gathered that Momoa stars as a vicious werewolf antagonist in this film, deciding “who lives and who dies.” Definitely not your pretty-boy Taylor Lautner in Twilight kind of werewolf.

10. Road to Paloma (2014)

This low-budget film was written and directed by Jason Momoa. He also stars as a bad boy named Wolf, who escapes on his motorcycle after avenging his mother’s death. Can you see the pattern here?

9. The Red Road (2014)

Jason Momoa has a knack for playing the bad boy. And boy, is he baaaddd.

8. Bullet to the Head (2012)

You know you’re a true action star when you land a role in a movie starring Sylvester Stallone.

7. Game of Thrones (2011)

Jason Momoa’s romantic appearance on HBO mega-hit Game of Thrones was what kept us all watching the show (not the fabulous writing, gripping gore, or super talented cast). If only he managed to live past the first season. We’ll still remember him as our sun and stars for this performance.

6. Conan the Barbarian (2011)

Sorry, Arnold, but we prefer Jason Momoa’s 2011 version of Conan the Barbarian.

5. The Game (2006)

In 1999, Jason Momoa played a hunky lover boy on four episodes of this comedy-drama TV series.

4. Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009)

You don’t want to mess with weapon-wielding Ronon Dex. Jason Momoa is all grown up (with dreadlocks to prove it) as a melee-warrior in the science-fiction TV series Stargate Atlantis.

3. North Shore (2004-2005)

Jason Momoa played the Grand Waimea Hotel and Resort’s bartender on North Shore, a FOX prime-time soap opera that didn’t even last a year. FOX canned the show in 2005 after just 21 episodes. Who wouldn’t need a drink from bartender Momoa after such terrible news?

2. Baywatch Hawaii (1999-2001)

It’s hard to believe Jason Momoa sported a clean-cut look before playing rugged barbarian Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. Momoa was only in his 20s when he played young stud Jason Ioane on Baywatch Hawai‘i. He beat out thousands of actors, landing a leading role in the international hit TV series along side David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson and Michael Bergin.

1. Model of the Year Hawaii (1999)

Before Hollywood fame, Jason Momoa was discovered by international fashion designer Takeo, who helped launched his modeling career. He won Hawaii’s Model of the Year in 1999.
