Hawaii Book and Music Festival 2010

 

The annual event invites one and all to take part in a celebration of story and song on the weekend of May 15-16 at the Frank E. Fasi Civic Grounds at Honolulu Hale.

The event is filled with a number of opportunities to interact with your favorite local authors and enjoy beautiful Hawaiian music.

HONOLULU Magazine's own editor, A. Kam Napier will take place in two panel discussions at the festival.

  • First Draft Memory - The Media
    Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Hawaii Council for the Humanities Pavilion
    A panel discussion moderated by Susan Yim featuring Betty Shimabukuro, Ragnar Carlson, Karleen Chinen and Kam Napier.
     
  • A Discussion on Public Education System lead by Ann Shea Bayer, author of Going Against the Grain with Former US Representative and current Gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie and Kam Napier on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Admission to the festival is free and takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. There is a special Outrigger Kani Ka Pila Concert on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. featuing Maunalua.

Highlights include:

  • A panel discussion on Hawaii Sustainability & Carbon Offsets moderated by James Koshiba and featuring former Gov. George Ariyoshi, Erwin Hudelist and Jeff Mikulina
    Saturday, 12 noon at the Main Stage
  • A World Dance showcase with Willow Chang and friends
    Saturday & Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. on the Main Stage
  • The Hawaii Council for Humanities Pavilion presents over 60 writers and thinkers in 14 panels on Telling Tales: The Uses of Memory.
    Throughout both days
  • A Hawaiian Culture "Alana" (Awakening) Pavilion showing where the most innovative artists are taking classic Hawaiian storytelling, and what are the core issues that are driving the changes.

Additional Main Stage performances include Jeff Peterson (Sunday at 4 p.m.), Brittni Paiva (Saturday at 1 p.m.), Na Palapalai  (Sunday at Noon) and Kekuhi & Kaumakaiwa Kanakaole (Sunday at 1 p.m.).

Seven additional pavilions offer programming throughout the day for a variety of interests and audiences.
