SHOW US YOUR PORTRAITS... 7TH ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST

It’s that time of year again! HONOLULU Magazine is calling for entries for our 7th annual Photo Contest. This year, we challenge you with a theme: Portraits. The winner will receive a prize and be published in the January 2012 issue of HONOLULU.


 

We're looking for new and interesting photography that captures the essence of one of the wide range of people who call Hawaii home. Feel free to define "portrait" loosely—whether it's a formal studio shot or a candid capture, your cutest niece or a stranger on the street, the main thing is that a person be the main focus of the photo. We look forward to seeing your creative interpretations of our theme!

 

OFFICIAL RULES AND ELIGIBILITY


➢    Photos must be the original works of the photographer.

➢    Photos must reflect the theme: Portraits

➢    Photos must not have been previously published, HONOLULU retains first-time rights to publish the winning photos.

➢    Photos must be shot in Hawaii between October 2010 and October 2011.

➢    Each photographer may submit no more than 2 entries.

➢    An entry form must accompany all entries. If submitting a hard copy print, the following fields should be included:

  • Name
  • Address
  • City, ST  ZIP
  • Phone
  • E-mail (if available)
  • Title of Photo
  • Artists Statement (description of photo and why you took it or what it means to you)
  • Type of camera used
  • Location of photo
  • Approx. date photo taken

➢    Digital submissions are highly encouraged, but size limitations may apply (less than 1 MB). All photos should be no larger than 8" x 10".

➢    Print submissions are also welcomed, but should include an entry form on the back of each print. Print submissions should also be limited to 8” x 10”.  Anything larger will be disqualified.  All submissions must fit into an envelope no larger than 9” x 12”.

➢    If sending print submissions, please do not send originals.  Materials will not be returned.

➢    All entries must be received by October 31, 2011 11:59 PM (HST). Mail in entries must be postmarked by October 28, 2011.

➢    Contest is open to everyone, except employees of PacificBasin Communications, aio LLC and its affiliates.

➢    HONOLULU reserves the right to publish all submitted photos in print and on the Web, including Facebook and Twitter.

JUDGING

➢  Entries will be judged by the editorial and design staff of HONOLULU Magazine, along with guest judges Elyse Butler and Matt Mallams.

Elyse Butler is a photographer based in Honolulu, Hawaii with a fervor and focus on documenting the complexities of life. Using her camera as a medium for self-discovery, she takes pictures to question and understand the nature of who we are. She is a founding member of the Aevum photo collective and has won numerous awards in the College Photographer of the Year and Women in Photojournalism contests. Her clients and publications include Honolulu Magazine, Hana Hou! The Hawaiian Airlines Magazine, Discover, Men's Journal, the New York Times, the FADER,  and many more.  Her work has been exhibited at the San Francisco Exposure Gallery, the Visions Gallery in Ventura, California, and most recently the Center for New Media and the Arts in Bethel, Connecticut.

 

Matt Mallams is an editorial and commercial photographer based in Hawaii. He has a passion for exploring the streets, working in response to what is given to him, and creating compositions mixing light, color, subjects, reflections, and interactions between people and their environments. Mallams is a founding member of the Aevum photo collective and his work has been recognized by the College Photographer of the Year contests. His clients include Hana Hou!, Honolulu Magazine, Contour by Getty, the FADER, Revolver, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many more. Recently he exhibited his work at the Center for New Media and the Arts in Bethel, Connecticut, the Ong King Arts Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the San Francisco Exposure Gallery.

➢  All entries will be judged anonymously.  The photographer’s name should not appear anywhere on the photo or on the digital file.

➢  Judges will select finalists and the Grand Prize Winner. Finalists will appear on Facebook as a contest to determine a Readers' Choice winner. The Grand Prize winning photo will be published in our January 2012 issue. Grand Prize, Readers' Choice and Finalists will appear on our website in December 2011.
 

PRIZES

➢    First place: A romantic weekend getaway at the Halekulani, includes 2-night accomodation and daily breakfast for 2. Also, the first place winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to Ritz Camera and a complimentary 1-year subscription to HONOLULU Magazine. The winning photo will also be published in our January 2012 issue.

➢    Second place: $50 gift certificate to Ritz Camera and a complimentary 1-year subscription to HONOLULU Magazine.

➢    Third place: $25 gift certificate to Ritz Camera and a complimentary 1-year subscription to HONOLULU Magazine.

➢   Readers' Choice winner: $100 gift certificate to Ritz Camera and a complimentary 1-year subscription to HONOLULU Magazine.
 

DEADLINE

➢    Entries must have been received via digital submission or delivered to our office no later than 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2011.

➢    Mailed entries must have been postmarked by October 28, 2011.
