Providing an incredible foundation of character, heart and excellence for more than half a century for generations of Hawai`i’s keiki makes Holy Nativity School a shining gem in East Oahu. The school has fostered a rich history of creating a quality learning environment in a small intimate setting for children from age three through sixth grade. A student-designed, eco-friendly playground, built by the school and local community, and October’s successful annual Great Pumpkin Festival give the HNS community much to celebrate.
One of the most exciting HNS signature programs is global education. Students learn to appreciate the world and local culture to better prepare them for the 21st century. The school’s integrated, project-based curriculum is delivered by talented and committed teachers who provide individualized attention to encourage students’ outstanding academic achievements and help them to hone their leadership skills. Teachers enjoy the independence to develop programs and courses, reflecting their own creativity to keep their classrooms fresh and students engaged.
“In the Episcopal tradition, we are called to create an inclusive and respectful learning community for all,” says Tim Spurrier, HNS head of school. “The growth and development of each child involves many dimensions: heart, mind, body, and soul. When you visit our campus, you will see our motto, ‘Character, Heart, and Excellence,’ in action.” The first elementary school in Hawaii accredited by WASC, HNS continues to be the state’s only Episcopal school focusing exclusively on the preschool and elementary grade years.
To educate the whole child, five specialist teachers in music/Hawaiian studies, art, physical education, religion and computer technology work collaboratively with classroom teachers to enrich the instructional day. HNS also offers unique opportunities for experiential learning through service learning projects and class trips to the Big Island, Maui and Arizona.
Technologically advanced, HNS features a wireless campus, interactive Promethean Boards and SMART Boards in classrooms, 1:1 iPads for third through sixth grade and laptops in Kindergarten through second grade. This one-class-per-grade level school includes facilities more often seen at larger schools—three playfields, a full-size gymnasium, and art room including a kiln, music room and computer lab—on a beautiful and open, safe and quiet two-acre campus.
Exciting new initiatives include the Buddy Bench, foreign language instruction, and exciting Extended Day classes, such as Circus and Theater. Offering Orton-Gillingham instruction encourages students to speak, hear, see and feel the language arts through a multi-sensory and sequential approach to spelling, reading and writing, and allows teachers to personalize learning using a variety of learning styles.
HNS’ big school experience in a small school setting values high expectations balanced with great heart. Each year, graduates successfully transition to Hawai`i’s finest secondary schools. Prospective families are encouraged to schedule a personalized campus tour to experience the school in action.
