Kissed by Maui's all-natural lipsticks handmade in Kihei
We hate to kiss and tell, but we just can't keep our lips sealed about Kissed by Maui, a new all-natural lipstick line handmade in North Kihei.
Its founder, Robin Kory, has lipstick-making down to a science. The biology major became aware of the dangers of toxins in cosmetics and cleaning products thanks to her work as a health inspector, then as a paralegal at a large law firm in Ohio. So, she taught herself how to make her own lipsticks by heating and molding a mixture of high-quality, mostly organic ingredients, like castor, jojoba and vitamin E oils, raw unrefined shea butter, pure beeswax and pikake essential oil from the Big Island.
One swipe and you'll realize these sticks are kind of the balm. No, really. Our editors road-tested a sample and found it super moisturizing and easy to wear. The color is surprisingly sheer: expect more pigment than a tinted lip balm but less than an average lipstick with a slick, glossy finish. The colors shown online are surprisingly true to life, though we suggest sticking to the brighter end of the line's 10-shade spectrum (Island Girl, a raisin-plum, failed to flatter any pucker in the office).
Each tube comes with its own ingredient list, many of which are sourced from zero-waste manufacturers, and absolutely nothing has been tested on animals.
Even more reason to twist and pout.
$17, available on Maui at Collections, 3677 Baldwin Ave., and Green Ti Boutique & Massage, 40 N. Market St., and online at kissedbymaui.com.
