6 Activities to Fill the Long Weekend
Start planning! There’s plenty to do this weekend.
Throw Some Shade
What: We love the effortlessly chic styles at the too-cool boutique We Are Iconic, a one-stop shop for snagging your hip-kid uniform. And, because a key part of any hip kid’s uniform is—duh—a fly pair of sunnies, you won’t want to miss the store’s Valley Eyewear event this weekend. Not only will there be more than 40 styles and colors of the must-have sunglasses to select from for preorder, the We Are Iconic team will also be offering discounts, giveaways and bubbly.
When: Friday, May 22, 3–7 p.m. and Saturday, May 23, 11 a.m.–2 p.m.
Where: 1236 Waimanu St.
Details: Check out other Valley Eyewear styles here.
What: If you’re anything like us, your normal Sunday night consists of moping around the house, loudly mourning the end of the weekend. Instead of being a Debbie Downer, finish the weekend with a bang at Ward Village’s new Kona Nui Nights event, which happens every month in the courtyard of the IBM building. This month, enjoy a show with Ka‘ea Lyons as emcee, Hālau Hula Ka Lehua Tuahine, Kaiholu and Kawika Kahiapo, not to mention treats from food trucks and a cash bar. Seating is limited, so make sure you reserve your spot early.
When: Sunday, May 24, 4–7 p.m.
Where: IBM Building Courtyard
Details: Tickets are free at eventbrite.com.

In the Sack
What: Can we just dive into the quaint little world of Rifle Paper Co. and live there forever? The stationery company has been on fire the last couple of years, with one collab we can’t get enough of after another, from classic novels to clothing. The latest, released this week, is just in time for summer: a collection of totes and bags from Le Sportsac that have Rifle illustrations, perfect for carrying with you everywhere. Think pretty cosmetics pouches with drawings of beauty products, or a travel tote with an appropriately wanderlust-y Monaco-inspired design.
Where: Available at lesportsac.com.
Details: Our fave? We've loved backpacks since that Jasmine one we had in second grade, so first on our to-buy list is definitely this baby.
What: All we need to say: kim chee mac salad. Have we got your attention yet? It’s just one of the dishes that will be available at the first-ever Pearl City Eat the Street. Considering what a success the other Eat the Streets across the island have been (if you consider stuffing yourself until you’re uncomfortably full a success, which we definitely do), you won’t want to miss this. That, and the fact that delicious vendors such as Kau Kau Grill, Inferno’s Pizza, The Girls Who Bake Next Door and Primo Popcorn will be there.
When: Saturday, May 23, 2–7 p.m.
Where: Pearl City High School Stadium, 2100 Ho‘oki‘eki‘e St.
Details: For a list of vendors, visit eatthestreethawaii.com.
What: Did anyone else just die when models Kendall Jenner and Jourdan Dunn hit the red carpet of the Billboard Music Awards with the news that the next H&M collab would be with uber-fierce luxury brand Balmain? After seeing Dunn’s military-inspired ensemble from the new collection, we wanted more. To tide us over until the lookbook comes out, check out this interview with Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing to learn what to expect from the collection’s release come November.
When: The collection comes out in stores and online Nov. 5.
Where: Read the interview at style.com.
Details: Of course, Kylie had to get in on the Balmain action too.
Light It Up
What: The “lucky we live Hawai‘i” sentiment couldn’t be stronger than it is on Memorial Day as we watch the lanterns float out at Ala Moana Beach Park. Not only is it a beautiful way to remember loved ones, seeing the city come together (like, really close together—don’t go if you don’t like crowds!) is a sight in itself. Really take advantage of your day off with a hike up to the Punchbowl cemetery in the morning, then head down to the beach for a touching cap-off. Happy Memorial Day!
When: Monday, May 25, 6:15 p.m.
Where: Ala Moana Beach Park (Magic Island end)
Details: Want to get involved? Check out lanternfloatinghawaii.com for more info.
