Weekend Picks: 6 Reasons to Say TGIF

Lei Chic’s guide to the weekend’s best events.

Bye, Bye, Bye

What: Talk about a hard goodbye: Our Kailua shop-a-thons are about to get a bit shorter, now that 3rd Ave Shore, the adorable art decal Etsty-turned-brick-and-mortar shop nestled next to Kailua General Store, has announced this will be its last month open. We loved stopping by for fun, tropical decals to adorn our walls, as well as the super-cute creations it stocks from fellow Etsy stores (including our favorite finds for tots: Sea Wee headbands). We’ll be sure to get in our goodbyes (and last-minute shopping) before the month is over.
Where: 171 Hāmākua Dr., Kailua
When: The store will be open through April 30
Details: This wave decal is right out of the beach house of our dreams.  Thank goodness you can still shop for cute creations in the brand’s Etsy shop.

Brush Off

What: Sure, you love your office job. Your career is totally taking off and you feel on top of the professional world—except for those nights when the 19-year-old aspiring artist in you starts whining about not being creatively fulfilled. SIGH. Indulge that side of you this weekend at Manifest’s Sangria and Paint party, where you can flex your youthful artistic muscles creating a canvas painting you can take home, while also sipping sangria—something your adult self will be more than happy to partake in.
When: Saturday, April 4, 5:30–8 p.m.
Where: Manifest, 32 N. Hotel St.
Details: $35. Contact 260-8182 for more information.

What: The second we saw the trailer for Disney’s live-action Cinderella, we knew we had to see the movie. We’ve been humming and waltzing our way through life since, daydreaming about being in our own fairy tale. Get a little taste of what that might be like at Jimmy Choo this Sunday, where you can play the princess and try on the limited-edition, super-luxe Jimmy Choo “Cinderella” slipper (it’s only $4,595, no big deal) while you sip on champagne and munch on macarons. The shoe is a sample, but you can place your order for a similar one if you have 5K to drop, or find other designs from the Jimmy Choo Cinderella collection—(almost) as beautiful, but infinitely more wearable.
When: Sunday, April 5, 10 a.m.–10 p.m.
Where: Jimmy Choo, Royal Hawaiian Center
Details: Now to just find a gown like Lily James’ in the film. And we don’t care it was torture to wear. Being a princess is a tough job, people!

Mad World

What: We know you already plan to watch the premiere of the final Mad Men season because … duh.  And while we totally support you dressing up by yourself in your apartment and getting tanked on Manhattans, you’ll probably have even more fun with fellow fans at the Mad Men Twister Party at Bar 35. Watch the premiere, of course, and enjoy ’60s-inspired music with DJs TripleByPass and Mr. Nick, free appetizers and a glass of spiked punch. There will also be retro cocktails and contests.
When: Sunday, April 5, 3 p.m.
Where: Bar 35, 35 N. Hotel St.
Details: Free (your bar tab after the punch, however, is all on you, ya little boozehound). Call 537-3535 for more information.

Dress Code

What: You follow all the right blogs, read all the right mags and shop at all the right places. But, sometimes, having a little cheat sheet of fashion’s what’s what would be nice. Take a look at Racked’s incredible spring shopping guide, a beautifully interactive piece of online reading fashionistas should bookmark, stat. From the best of beauty and runway inspiration to accessories to buy now and the hottest colors of the moment, it’s an easy read for keeping your style fresh and updated.
Where: racked.com
Details: Our favorite section of the guide has got to be What to Buy. We need those mules.

Sugar and Vice

What: Ladies who feel they need to keep their reading of Vice a secret, thanks to the magazine’s ultra-bro reputation, will want to take a gander at New York Magazine’s piece with Ellis Jones, the recently appointed, first-ever female editor-in-chief in the company’s 20-year history. As the head honcho, Jones plans to add more literary and hard-hitting journalistic pieces to the rag famous for crass jokes. Think pieces more akin to the magazine’s recent lengthy investigation of the killing of a transgender Filipina woman by a U.S. marine.
Where: nymag.com
Details: Read some of Jones’ articles here.
