Lei Chic's Guide to the Best Weekend Events
Weekend Picks - June 5, 2014
Dance, Dance, Revolution
What: Summer means three things: beach, barbecues and bon dances. Does anything say "summer" more than a string of lanterns, some ono-licious local food and a bevy of jolly folk dancers? The first of the season will be held at the Hawaii State Library, where the great lawn will be filled with the festive sounds of Japanese music. See you at the dance circle!
When: Saturday, June 7, 10 a.m.–11:30 a.m.
Where: Hawaii State Library
Details: For more information call the Art, Music and Recreation Section of the Hawaii State Library at 586-3520. Also, visit our website for a complete listing of all the dances this summer.
What: We've been dying to see Interisland Terminal's latest indoor park space, Kakaako Agora, since it was announced months ago. Since then, the Interisland Terminal team has been raising money and building the structure, which was designed by renowned architects Atelier Bow-Wow. This week celebrates the Agora’s opening with “June Kaboom,” a lineup of free public events. The month will be positively packed full of screenings, performances and presentations, and it all kicks off with Sunday's screening of If You Build It, a documentary about designers/activists working with local high schoolers in impoverished areas of North Carolina.
When: Screening on Sunday, June 8 at 8 p.m.
Where: 441 Cooke St.
Details: Go to interislandterminal.org to learn more about the project and the schedule of events. The event is free.
Paint the Town
What: Your parents' refrigerator can attest to this: You've always had a talent for the fine arts. Maybe you've outgrown the macaroni medium (maybe not), but you've still got it. Try out your skills at this week's Paint the Night Away event, happening in Waialua. Paint the Night Away, a series of casual painting classes, is held throughout the island, giving you the opportunity to stimulate your creative impulses while hanging out with friends. Who knows? Maybe you’re the next Van Gogh (minus the crazy, please).
When: Friday, June 6 at 6 p.m.
Where: North Shore Soap Factory, Old Waialua Sugar Mill
Details: The event costs $40. All materials are included. Go to paintthenightaway.com to register.
What: The plot: Two percent of the world disappears and the remaining 98 percent go a little bit cuckoo. The Leftovers is mysterious. It's dramatic and, most importantly, it's going to be made into an HBO show that comes out this month, starring Jennifer Aniston's bf, Justin Theroux. You only have a few short weeks to read the paperback and be that cool person who’s totally in the know about pop culture before it happens.
When: Show premieres on Sunday, June 29 at 10 p.m. on HBO
Where: Purchase the book at barnesandnoble.com
Details: $11.99. The show is by the creators of Lost and Friday Night Lights, btw. Yup. This is going to be intense.
The Jailhouse Rocks
What: Netflix is like the super best friend you always call when you break up with your boyfriend—it’s always there for you. And ever since its original series Orange Is The New Black came out, your relationship has been better than ever. Get your prison-striped jammies and spot on the couch ready because the second season is all set to be released this Friday.
When: Friday, June 6 at 10 p.m.
Details: Also check out Derek, starring Ricky Gervais of The Office fame in a show that looks like it can only be described as "British." We already love it.
What: Lana Del Rey has been a fashion/music scene It girl for a few years now (omgherfirstalbum) but she really secured her spot on the map when she played the Kimye wedding last month—apparently for free. And by free we mean the oodles of press she got regarding the fete. Taste in pro-bono gigs aside, her music is just as much a stunner as her face, so take the chance to listen to the glorious new “West Coast” and all the other leaked tracks (some intentionally and others not so much) before her new album Ultraviolence comes out later this month.
When: New album comes out Saturday, June 13
Details: Visit lanadelrey.com to listen to some of the new tracks.
