Weekend Picks - Saturday, June 1, 2013
Late adds to Lei Chic's guide to the weekend's best events
Braise the Bar
What: Chef Jamal Lahiani marks his return to thirtyninehotel with a new cocktail-inspired bar menu. Our favorites, shown above, include juicy Margarita Mussels marinated in tequila with crispy Portuguese sausage strips, black beans, orange and red pepper (the flavors, like the drink, blend surprisingly well). Also addicting: crispy, salty Triple Cooked Fries served with bacon, truffled cheddar, and green onion-filled sour cream (there's no actual alcohol in this one - the sour cream is served in a crushed beer can instead). Photo by Martha Cheng.
Where: 39 N. Hotel St.
Details: Approximately $6-$12 per dish. Click here for more information.
What: Meet actors Alex Newell (Glee) and Cameron Deane Stewart (Pitch Perfect) at Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival's opening night reception. The evening includes a screening of their new movie, Geography Club, chronicling a secret society where outcasts can escape the social horrors of high school.
When: Tuesday at 6 p.m. Movie starts at 8 p.m.
Where: Honolulu Museum of Art's Doris Duke Theatre, 900 S. Beretania St.
Details: $15, tickets available here. View the full schedule, including a VIP red carpet event, here.
Run of the Milly
What: Banana Republic's collaboration with Milly is now on sale - a 60+-piece collection for women and men inspired by summertime in the Hamptons (think bright pastels and preppy prints). The accessories are just as fun with vintage-inspired bib necklaces, roomy printed totes, and neon wicker clutches. The store is also offering 30 percent off full-priced styles, but sadly the discount doesn't apply to this collecton.
Details: Shop it now.
Keeping Up with the Jones
What: It's been more than a decade, but Bridget Jones is back! Helen Fielding's third installment, Bridget Jones: Mad About a Boy, will be released October 15. Our favorite spinster continues to keep a diary while experimenting with texts and social media. Naturally, shenanigans ensue.
Details: Here's a small excerpt to tide you over.
Som Assembly Required
What: Little-known fact: American designer Peter Som also knows his way around a kitchen. Refinery29 stopped by his West Village apartment to watch him prepare three delicious dishes, including roasted carrot veloute with mini grilled cheese sandwiches.
Details: Check out his drool-worthy recipes and tips here.
