Six reasons to do something this weekend
Weekend Picks - June 27, 2013
This Site is The Balm
What: Want a fun gift that doesn't cost a fortune? Nivea's new Style, Uncapped website allows you to customize your own lip balm cap with more than 400 patterns and symbols. The company even enlisted the help of designer Rebecca Minkoff for a few special prints (shown left and available here). There are a few catches: the design tool is clunky and you've got to register and share your creations before buying them, but you do end up with the coolest party favor ever.
Details: $5.99 each for orders of five or less, $4.99 each for orders of six through 20, $3.99 for orders of 20 or more. Shipping is $1 for one lip balm and free for orders of two or more. Start designing here.
What: Pets and their owners will purr over Bow Wow Meow, a pet-centric pop-up at fishcake. Shop pet-themed accessories, clothes, housewares, and even plants, visit a pet psychic, get a pet portrait, and fuel up with coffee from Gorilla in the Cafe (for you) and Hawaii Doggie Bakery treats (for the pooch). The Hawaiian Humane Society will also share information on dog therapy and cat adoption.
When: Saturday, noon-4pm.
Where: fishcake, 307c kamani st.
Details: Free admission. Call (808) 593-1231 for more information.
What: Stop by Shoppatini tonight to enjoy free samples of M Nightclub's new sushi and sake menu while shopping the newest finds from Valerie Joseph, Bamboo Sky, Mikinola, Pure Joy Adornments, and Groff Art. Plus, sip on $2 martinis, and $3 Miller and Coors Light.
When: Tonight, 5-10 p.m.
Where: M Nightclub, Waterfront Plaza.
Details: No cover, free validated parking.
Flea the Scene
What: Pull on your hat and cowboy boots and help Art & Flea channel the Wild Wild West while perusing more than 60 local vendors featuring vintage, handmade goods, art, and more. Highlights include live art and music performances, Universal Babel Service typists, and giveaways from In4mation, Susu HI, and Yoga for the People.
When: Tonight, 5-10 p.m.
Where: Fresh Cafe, 831 Queen St.
Details: $3 admission or $2 if dressed in western attire, all ages welcome. More details here.
Buy the Book
What: The Friends of the Library of Hawaii's annual book sale has been going on since last Monday, but the major, dirt cheap discounts happen this weekend. On Saturday, everything will be 50 percent off, then on Sunday (the sale's last day) the price drops to a whopping 50 cents.
When: Saturday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Sunday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Where: McKinley High School.
Details: More details here.
What: Check out Vogue's in-depth profile of Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, appearing in July's issue and posted online a few days ago. The author praises her as a political stand-out and writes "she's in a vanguard of women leaders positioning themselves to succeed such long-running institutions as Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and Dianne Feinstein."
