6 Cool Things to Do This Hot Weekend
Lei Chic’s guide to the weekend’s best events.
Merry and Bright
What: Seems there's been an oddly timed epidemic of holiday cheer going around lately, what with all these Christmas-in-July sales. We're not complaining. In fact, the Fighting Eel sale, happening through tomorrow, is making us feel downright jolly. Score $40 to $70 recuts of favorite styles in a plethora of patterns, from vibrant, bright bursts to classic monochrome. Swingy tunic dresses? Check. Slouchy tees? Double check. Thank goodness Santa doesn't take summer vacations.
When: Friday, July 31 and Saturday, Aug. 1, 9 a.m.–6 p.m.
Where: 1133 Bethel St.
Details: Call 738-9300 for more information.
What: Saffron ginger gelato from Il Gelato. Falafel "boats" from Greens and Vines. Tabbouleh tacos from La Taqueria. Is your mouth watering? Ours, too, thanks to the delish-looking lineup for today's Eat the Street, which is taking a page from Scheherazade's book and going with a Middle Eastern theme. Check out these exotic dishes, see a few of your favorite food trucks and find something new (such as Maui-based Donut Dynamite, in Honolulu for the first time) at the new location at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park.
When: Friday, July 31, 4–9 p.m.
Where: 102 Ohe St.
Details: Visit the Eat the Street Facebook page for more information.
What: In 2001, a hilarious group of then-little-known actors and actresses came together for a silly summer camp movie that would become a cult classic among millennials. Those actors and actresses included Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper (and he wasn’t the heartthrob, guys) and Amy Poehler, and it was nothing short of amazing. That’s why we can’t wait to go home after work today, order takeout (because we do not have time to cook. Not tonight.) and watch the entire brand-freaking-new Netflix prequel series, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, that was released today. Not only are all the original cast members in it (yep, it’s a prequel and they are ten years older; commence giggles), there are a few additions that are almost too good to be true, including Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm.
When: Begins streaming today, July 31.
Details: Check out the trailer and a chat with star Janeane Garofalo here.
What: It’s been hot. Like, really hot. Too hot to go outside, walk to the bank and cash your paycheck, much less schlep your sweaty little self to the mall for retail therapy as often as you’d like. Thank goodness Racked has our backs with this handy list of the best online shopping stores so you can do your browsing (and buying) from the comfort of your air-conditioned abode. The bonus? Summer sale season is upon us, so keep your eyes peeled for specials from these stores, which include some of our go-to’s (ASOS, Cos) and a couple of new ones we can’t wait to try. Shopping just got cool again.
Details: Can we just say that Yoox is our new homepage?
What: Just looking at an Anthropologie catalog gives us outfit inspiration, but we could still use a more direct infusion of the brand’s pretty-as-a-picture style. Fortunately, the store’s personal shopper service is here to help. Schedule an appointment with stylists for when you’re feeling like you’re in an ensemble rut and they’ll get you squared away in no time. After all, even the best of the best start running out of new ways to dress up as “guest to a summer wedding,” amirite?
Where: Make your appointment at anthropologie.com.
Details: Or, if you’re short on time, you could check out the Anthropologie blog for quick styling tips, such as this super helpful denim must-do’s post.
Get With It
What: You don’t need another excuse to shop—but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Ward Village is launching its Spend and Get campaign for the month of August, which rewards you for all your hard shopping work with complimentary movie tickets. Spend $100 or more at any of Ward Village’s hot shops, such as MORI, The Face Shop, Chai Studio or Eden in Love, and receive a complimentary movie ticket. Finally: being appreciated for all the effort we put into shopping. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.
When: Aug. 1–30. Receipts only redeemable on weekends.
Where: Redeem your receipts at Executive Chef or Tiare Teiti All Things Tahiti.
Details: The limit is two tickets per person per week. That means each weekend you can turn in $200 worth of receipts and get two tickets back. Must be 13 years or older. While supplies last.
