Jiwa Jiwa Press: On Our To-Buy List at the New Nordstrom
Gotta tell someone “Cheehoo!”? You’re in luck.
Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat—there are a million and one ways to shove your own foot in your mouth nowadays, so it’s important to know that sometimes it’s better to just keep your mouth shut (ahem, Yeezy). If you can’t say anything nice, better not say it at all, right?
Unless you’re saying it with Jiwa Jiwa Press, a Kaka‘ako-based letterpress print shop run by local designer Cherish Prado. Prado’s got a real gift for gab—when it comes to stationery, that is. She has a solid design and printing background (she went to school on the West Coast, where she lived for a decade going to school and working at print shops) and a unique, irreverent sense of taste that has us totally charmed. And we’re not the only ones—Prado launched Jiwa Jiwa Press upon her homecoming about a year ago, and her designs are gaining a following: Grab her greeting cards at Mori, Green Mountain and Guava Shop and, in the coming months, South Shore Paperie and even the new Nordstrom location. See? She’s definitely more than just talk.
But what really keeps us coming back is, indeed, her words. We love bright shocks of color, the bold typefaces and the cheeky humor: “So da kine!,” bemoans one card, while another bellows, “Cheehoo!” and another concedes, “My bad...” We’ve all needed to say that at one time or another.
Oh, and, yes, she does do wedding suites—and it’s just as unconventional as you’d expect from the Jiwa Jiwa brand. Prado shoots straight with her clients: She offers a pay-what-you-want method, which means that, after the cost of materials (the deposit), the client sets the labor rate and witnesses the printing of the invites at the studio.
Speak for yourself? No thanks. We’ll mouth off with a couple of these witty quips.
Check out the cards when they hit the new Nordstrom at Ala Moana, opening in March, or visit Prado at Lana Lane Studios, 327 Lana Lane, 10 a.m.–5 p.m, Monday–Friday. Visit jiwajiwapress.com for more information.
