6 Reasons This Weekend Will Rock
Lei Chic’s guide to the weekend’s best events.
What: Remember two months ago when we were all, “Yay, summer! We love you!” and now everyone feels like they're dying every time they step outside into the heat? We miss those love-filled first days, but, thankfully, Bikini Bird and Olive Boutique are here to remind us why this is our favorite season, with a hot pop-up shop happening this weekend with all your favorite swim and beach brands. Think Mikoh, Acacia, Tori Praver Swim and more. Cool off with always-appropriate mimosas while you shop, and enjoy 15 percent off the whole store. OK, we love you again, summer.
When: Sunday, Aug. 30, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
Where: Olive Boutique, 43 Kīhāpai St., Kailua
Details: And talk about perfect timing. It’s been so hot, we’ll probably start wearing our ’kinis 24/7 pretty soon.
It’s Greek To Me
What: Myths. Amazing food. Sexy statues. There are tons of reasons to love Greek culture, which is why we’re definitely making the 34th Annual Greek Festival a must-do on our weekend agenda. In between watching the jolly Greek dancers and other entertainment, you’ll love munching on all the dolmades, baklava and gyros from the food booths. Merchants will also be selling art, clothing, books and Greek imports, so save some of that pita money for a mini shop-a-thon later.
When: Saturday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 30, noon–9 p.m.
Where: McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Park, 1201 Ala Moana Blvd.
Details: Visit greekfestivalhawaii.com for more information.
What: Arts and Flavors Hawai‘i is back with more shopping goodness to brighten up your weekend. And—what a coincidence—the team behind the event is bringing in some of our favorite vendors and calling in the whole neighborhood to make it all happen. The Cut Collective will be delivering that sale we promised you last week (we were so dying to shop it that we jumped the gun a little) at the Mānoa Innovation Center, while Kira Hawai‘i, Choco Le‘a and Pure Joy Hawai‘i will have pop-up shops at the adorable Green Mountain Hawai‘i gift shop. Finally, stop in at Morning Glass Coffee and check out a live DJ—just in case your double espresso doesn’t amp you up enough.
When: Saturday, Aug. 29, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Where: Mānoa Innovation Center, 2800 Woodlawn Drive; Morning Glass Coffee, 2955 E. Mānoa Road; Green Mountain Hawai‘i, 2819 Ka‘onawai Place.
Details: Stamp cards will be available at each location. Additional discounts for completing entire stamp card.
Taste the Rainbow
What: Eat the Street has been bringing us food truck goodness for ages, and we were really thinking it couldn’t get any better. Think again. At the grand opening of Eat the Street’s new “Makers and Tasters” format, there will be more of everything. Not only will you be able to find more than 60 vendors, plenty of parking and seating, there will also be live entertainment by Kapena Boy. Plus, look for your favorite food themes at the opening, including garlic, bacon, spicy, chocolate and more.
When: Friday, Aug. 28, 5–10 p.m.
Where: The Old Fisherman's Wharf, 1011 Ala Moana Blvd.
Details: Visit makersandtasters.com for more information.
Something Funny About Him
What: Get ready for some college nostalgia. That’s right, invoke memories of that pizza-binging, keg-guzzling, Pitchfork-review-reading time of your life by watching Netflix’s new comedy special Live (At The Time), which may be our favorite one yet. In it, Demetri Martin is back in the comedy game with stand-up that includes all the puns, songs, guitars and melancholy observations you’ve come to expect from him. Hashtag heart.
Details: Turns out we all have L-shaped couches! (Watch the special. You’ll get it.)
Like A Good Neighbor
What: We’re always about a little self-indulgent shopping, because, hey: We deserve it. But we’re also about giving back now and then, especially when giving back involves getting a rose for ourselves (*devilish grin*). This coming Wednesday, Beretania Florist will be giving out 7,700 roses for its annual Good Neighbor Day celebration. Anyone who brings a canned food donation for the Hawai‘i Foodbank will get a gorgeous bouquet of a dozen roses—11 to share with neighbors, one to keep—while supplies last, so start gathering your canned goods together now before the work week bogs you down. Doing good never looked so pretty.
When: Wednesday, Sept. 2, 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Where: 1293 S. Beretania St.
Details: Visit beretaniaflorist.com for more information.
