8 ways to shop and eat your way to weekend bliss

Shop

Night Bright
What: Back-to-school shopping can be stressful. Your list of things to grab just goes on and on: sweet, after-class swimsuit, comfy, study-friendly kimono, flirty separates to impress the cute guy in the group project. Thank goodness for the one-stop shopping at Honolulu Night Market. Grab your fashions and, as always, reward your hard work with treats such as Fruity Pebble macarons, ice cream sandwiches or savory crepes.
When: Saturday, Aug. 16, 6 p.m.
Where: Kakaako Warehouse, 449 Cooke St.
Details: Parking available in the lot at 555 South St. Visit honolulunightmarket.com for more information on vendors.

Attend

Steel Waters
What: Lawn picnics are so last year. This year, it's not a party unless it's on a battleship. At least, that's the deal this Friday over at the Battleship Missouri Memorial, where the USS Missouri Memorial Association will be hosting an evening of activities for the keiki, picnicking, live music and dancing. Bring your own food, drinks and (non-glass) booze, and treat yourself to a truly unique, sunset-watching spot on the historic Mighty Mo.
When: Friday, Aug. 15, 6–9 p.m.
Where: 63 Cowpens St, Ford Island
Details: $5–$10 online. Call 455-1600 or visit the website for more information.

Shop

Heel Storm
What: You have those Coach heels you love. The Rebecca Minkoff mules you can't get enough of. The Tory Burch flats you live in. The bad news? So does everyone else. Kick that problem at the Salvatore Ferragamo custom shoe design event. To celebrate the iconic Vara shoe's 35th anniversary, guests can customize and purchase their own version of it. Control details such as heel height, color and bow shade for a totally unique addition to your closet.
When: Now until Aug. 18
Where: Salvatore Ferragamo, Royal Hawaiian Center
Details: $625 a pair. Can something be adorable 21 times? Check out this swoon-worthy video of 21 fashion icons and A-listers sporting their custom-made Ferragamos.

Read

Colorful Pages
What: From the land of hipster, dreamy literature comes Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, the latest from surreal-storytelling superstar, Haruki Murakami. On the surface, the book is about protagonist Tsukuru's journey to understand friendships past. Since this is Murakami, it's really about hallucinogenic inner worlds, a maelstrom of emotions and imagery. Still not intrigued? It sold a million copies in its first week in Japan.
When: The English edition was released on Tuesday
Where: Available at barnesandnoble.com.
Details: $18.75 for the hardcover edition and $10.99 for the eBook edition.

Shop

Converse Me
What: Another day, another kick-ass collab. The latest collaboration between Converse and Missoni (they've had eight since 2010) is just in time for fall, when you shed your slippers for sneakers to pound those campus halls. These perky pieces debuted last week at Nordstrom stores and feature the signature Missoni-style zig-zags spicing up a classic Converse structure, in high- or low-top styles. We love that sharp, deep-teal number, with alternating thin and thick stripes—talk about back-to-school style.
When: Available until Aug. 28
Where: Nordstrom, Ala Moana Center
Details: The Lucky Stone/Egret color is exclusive to Nordstrom stores, but you can shop the rest of the collection at the Converse website.

Shop

Shark Attract
What: Obviously, we love Shark Week. And since we also love cute additions to our jewelry box, we're all about the ByChari Shark Week event at Owens & Co. this weekend, where designer Chari Cuthbert will be showcasing her cute shark-tooth jewelry and taking orders for custom nameplate necklaces. Grab a glass of champagne while you browse and pick your prey. With every purchase of $125 or more, guests will receive a free pair of gold bar earrings.
When: Friday, Aug. 15 and Saturday, Aug. 16, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
Where: Owens & Co., 1152 Nuuanu Ave.
Details: Get $10 off all shark-tooth pieces at bychari.com when you use the code shark10.

Eat

Baker's Lovin'
What: We see a lot of chances to stock up on fashion and jewelry here at Lei Chic. But baked goods? Talk about a sweet idea. This weekend, MW Restaurant will host Baker Faire, a market of goods from seven Honolulu pastry chefs and bakers, including Lee Anne Wong of Koko Head Café and Chris Sy of Breadshop. Load up on goodies such as croissants, baklava, pineapple upside-down crostata, peach and ginger sticky buns ... are you drooling yet?
When: Saturday, Aug. 16, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. or until sold out
Where: MW Restaurant, 1538 Kapiolani Blvd.
Details: Check out Food and Dining Editor Martha Cheng's Biting Commentary post about the event.

Drink

Pint Size
What: Sometimes you gotta take one for the team in the spirit of charity. Like at the REAL Beer Festival, where the proceeds go to a good cause. The festival will showcase 60 craft beers from Hawaii, Mainland and international breweries, live entertainment and beer-centric food and will benefit local nonprofit organization Hawaii Agriculture Foundation. It'll be tough plowing your way through awesome brews and good food, but somebody's got to do it.
When: Saturday, Aug. 16, 2–6:30 p.m.
Where: Kakaako Makai Gateway Park, 677 Ala Moana Blvd.
Details: Tickets are $60 online or at REAL a Gastropub and Brew'd Craft Pub. Entry includes a commemorative beer mug, 10 beer-tasting coupons and unlimited sampling of dishes.
