First Thursdays Poetry Slam

Every First Thursday night, Pipeline Café opens its doors to the Slam Poetry Competition and Open Mic.  Hosted by Kealoha, the night showcases a parade of performers one right after another—at least 50 the night I visited.  Surprisingly, every one of the performers seemed fearless in the face of an audience numbering of more than 100.  Although, generally encouraging, a few audience members did shake their keys at a couple of the acts—which I learned is a bad thing—while doing the traditional act of snapping one’s fingers to other performers they thought were great.

The performances range from poetry to beat boxing and from singers to rappers. A DJ onstage helps with transitions, and an artist painted live on canvas from the beginning of the night to the end.

Last First Thursday, May 7, showcased C.R. Avery from Vancouver, BC, who really captivated the audience with his beat box, harmonica and singing talent.  This Thursday showcases Marc Bamuthi Joseph, a National Poetry Slam Champion, Broadway veteran and 2-time HBO Def Poet.
