Ka and Paparazzi Liven Up Ward

Ka and Paparazzi Liven Up Ward

How is Ward Center’s nightlife doing? On a Friday night, I hit newbie clubs, Ka Restaurant and Lounge and Paparazzi nightclub.

I started at Ka and was surprised by its $15 cover.  Who charges this much?  Well, apparently Paparazzi does too. Ka gave me two free drink tickets with the cover, but failed to mention to me that these were only good till 11 p.m., after which it still charges $15 to get in.  My second drink ticket ended up worthless.

Ka Restaurant and Lounge opened almost two months ago and takes the place of E&O Trading Co., a chic restaurant that had trendy fixtures and furnishings.  Now, the space is completely barren with no adornments except for the standing trashcans around the room and the numerous eye-catching red lanterns hanging overhead. The dance floor is an undefined, very large—therefore, intimidating—spot. The space is obviously where tables are placed during Ka’s restaurant hours, but what works for dinner doesn’t work for dancing.

Two doors down at Paparazzi, the dance floor only has to do one thing and people were dancing and the bar was crowded. Although it’s unclear where the club’s design, or theme, is going—with an Egyptian typeface that reminds me of Zanzabar and cheetah fabric accents around the room—it still presents itself very much as a nightclub.  I liked the central dance floor, go-go dance pods and mainstream music pumping through the speakers.  But, $15 worth?  This isn’t Level 4. Ten dollars is more common around town, and probably what these clubs should be charging.

Ka Restaurant and Lounge, Ward Center, 3rd Floor. 593-7885. Open Fridays and Saturdays as a nightclub, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Bar Paparazzi, Ward Center, 3rd Floor. 596-8850. Open Tuesday through Saturday.
