2018 Top Doctors: Julie Won Ireland, M.D.
Dr. Ireland is a Medical Geneticist at West Oahu Medical Genetics, which serves children and adults with medical conditions secondary to hereditary or genetic causes. While primarily serving the West side of Oahu, her patients come from all over the State of Hawai‘i.
Some of the medical conditions diagnosed and treated include: thalassemia, G6PD deficiency, neurofibromatosis, hearing loss, developmental delay, seizures, cardiomyopathy, and connective tissue disorders.
The genes we are born with may contribute to our risk of developing certain types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, colorectal, renal and prostate cancer. Individuals with an increased risk for a hereditary cancer syndrome are also seen.
Because of the complexity and personal nature of genetic conditions, Dr. Ireland takes extra time to evaluate and explain all aspects of the consultation, genetic testing and recommendations. She uses modern cytogenetic, molecular, genomic and biochemical genetic testing to assist in specialized diagnostic evaluations and implement therapeutic interventions.
Born and raised in Honolulu, she returned to Hawaii from the Mayo Clinic in 2005. She is Board Certified in Medical Genetics and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.
