Our Redeemer Lutheran School

2428 Wilder Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822, (808) 945-7765, www.ORLS-HI.org

Our Redeemer Lutheran School encourages students to be life-long learners and we are dedicated to our mission of connecting children with Jesus in a nurturing and challenging academic environment,” says Our Redeemer Lutheran School Principal BonnieJo Alle. Our Redeemer strives to prepare students with strong academic skills and technology know-how to meet the ever-changing challenges of the real world. The pre-school to Grade 8 college prep school also fosters timeless Christian values by laying a foundation in every student to become a person of compassion and good character.

Established in 1947 by Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Our Redeemer Lutheran School works closely with parents to establish and maintain open communication to provide a safe and caring learning environment where all students prosper. Located in Manoa, with the University of Hawaii nearby, the school attracts talented teachers and a diverse student body from all socio-economic backgrounds. Its successful pre-schools offer two convenient locations, including a site at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, which accepts toddlers, beginning at age 2.

Our Redeemer works at staying at the forefront of academic excellence, while ensuring a well-rounded learning environment for strong physical, emotional and spiritual growth for its students. Its recent major computer upgrade, providing students with state-of- the-art technology and training, enables students to navigate both Apple and Windows platforms using new Intel-driven Macs in age-appropriate technology curriculum. “We know parents are looking for top-notch computer literacy, so their children will be well-prepared for a technology-driven workplace,” says Alle. A contract with Ohana Computers ensures that teacher training and age and grade appropriate student curricula are up-to-date on the latest tech advances.

Our Redeemer has a long range technology plan to maintain continuous improvement. For the 2008-2009 school year, they are adopting a science curriculum in grades K to 5 to emphasize hands-on work and problem-solving skills that will compliment its excellent Middle School science curriculum. Science is part of the school’s comprehensive Core Knowledge Sequence curriculum that includes reading, history, geography, mathematics and language arts.

Their award-winning music program provides students with a rich music curriculum. There are music classes for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. Beginning in Grade 4, students may choose to participate in the string ensemble. In Grade 5, they may choose to participate in band or choir.

In addition, Our Redeemer has a separate art room where the children are taught in art instruction by a highly qualified art instructor. Starting in Grade 5, competitive team sports of volleyball and basketball are offered to both boys and girls with Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. Weekly Wednesday chapel services and community service encourage students “to reach out and share Jesus’ love with others,” says Alle. Featuring skits, songs and other creative means, each grade prepares two chapels each school year to share the Gospel of our Lord, she adds. With an enrollment of 200 annually, Our Redeemer can offer its students the personalized attention of small classes. “Our Redeemer is one of the most reputable and recognized schools on Oahu,” says Alle. “Parents, Faculty and Staff work together for a great school.”
