Celebrating its 30th anniversary, this small, caring, WASC accredited Montessori school for students from 18 months through 14 years strives to develop its students in a community of learning with a strong academic foundation. Learning “follows the chilld,” in keeping with the Montessori philosophy, to prepare students for stewardship of the world. “We create a learning environment that respects all children and all styles of learning,” says Head of School Cynthia Winans-Burns. The school’s academic disciplines embrace academic literacy (such as math and language arts), environmental literacy (sciences), and social literacy (community service).
The Maui school’s entire nine-acre campus is a classroom, featuring a large garden for hands-on scientific experience. This fall, the school opens a fourth preschool classroom and a third lower elementary classroom, with a new multipurpose building slated for 2009. It has won the 2006 NAIS Leading Edge Award for Environmental Sustainability and the 2006 International Design- Share Merit Award for building design.
